I am volunteering at a mechanic shop I had this problem with my car (but my lights were dimming as well) before I replaced the battery. Turned out my battery WAS dead but even with a new one car was still acting funny. The idol on it was not steady the best way to describe the sound was trying to suck a drink through a straw that had a whole in it. I did a little research online and although it COULD be the fuel filter or pump, the MAS (mass airflow sensor) seems to be the more likely problem. The cost for the replacement part on my 1996 Ford Contour GL 4cy 2.0L standard is $150.00 at autozone with a $60.00 core charge (which means you take the old one in and they give you back $60.00 if you dont you just pay full price). If you have a diagnostics and this is your problem just get the part and replace it yourself. there is a bracket on your hose with a pinch clip that has wires coming off of it (you have to pinch it for it to release) the silver thing that is attached to is your MAS. If you dont mind getting your hands dirty and saving a few hundred. I actually started volunteering to learn how to repair my own car.I've had it since 2003 and its been one of the greatest loves of my life lol. Please read I hope this can be of some help. Not sure about anyone elses car but every time mine did this my car died and with it my power steering.

This can be deadly on the road especially being that I am a mother of three. Carrying around these babies not knowing if the car was going to die in the middle of the highway during rush hour or I was going to lose power steering was just a panic attack WAITING to happen! If it's not a money issue and you have these problems just replace all three. When you put one new part on and there are three that depend on each other, if the other two are in rough condition it will ultimately effect the overall condition of your new part and it may not perform as well or as long as it is intended to. Anyway hope this helps good luck all! Heather Lynn
