Crown Victoria LX 4.6L

Problem started as a humming noise that I expected was from the rear end. It quickly turned into a louder whirring noise with light vibration. I pulled the rear wheels and the parking brake shoes fell out of the drums. Replaced them and put it back together figuring problem solved. Couldn't feel any problem when wheels were turned by hand and no noise. Back on the road the problem was still the same. Headed into work and heard a loud thud. Managed to drive it to my Ford dealer who took it apart and found the outer differential bearings blown apart and the carrier bearings worn out. All were replaced. I was lucky that no other damage was incurred as a result of all the steel pieces flying around in there. Final bill was $1050.00 Canadian.

I had checked the rear end fluid and it was only down about 2 ounces. So what gives here? I haven't yet read that this is a common problem on this year and model.
