The contact owns a 2010 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, she heard an abnormal whining sound coming from the front of the vehicle and she noticed a strong abnormal odor. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact continued to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the 4WD differential transfer unit had failed and was leaking fluid. The dealer advised the contact that the failure was unserviceable and the entire transfer unit needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under an unknown contract. The contact contacted other unknown dealers who also advised her the failure was unserviceable and the entire transfer unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 111,500.
