This happened twice on the highway in two days. Same symptom as everyone says on this forum, experienced suddenly loss power and yellow wrench light had to pull over and restart. No code on OBDII and dealer couldn't duplicate the problem and ask me to pick up the car. I requested them to check the throttle body as this is the most common issue of this car. Came out numbers were all ok they said. I asked them to replace the throttle body anyway. I will update if the it still happen after the replacement of the throttle body. Very dangerous and high risk driving the car that would suddenly loss power!

My wife's vehicle is a 2011 edge that has experienced the loss in power and wrench light, AWD off, messages as well. This has happened three or four times and recently happened to me as I was crossing a busy intersection in the vehicle. It resulted in a near collision and a horn honk from a frustrated driver who had to suddenly brake for me while I "limped" across. My Grandchildren frequently ride in this car and this is scary. Of course the Ford dealer has stated that they can't replicate it, no code stored and not much they can do. They claim ignorance of the issue which only adds to the customer frustration ! It took me less than two minutes to find multiple instances on the internet of the same issue by other owners, so that's a cover up. We will call Ford customer satisfaction tomorrow to voice our concern but something tells me we won't get far. In the mean time I'll be investigating the class action participation prospects.

Returning back to Miami/Homestead from being evacuated, (Hurricane Irma) while on the turnpike, the car de-activated my cruise control and would not accelerate. It limped while I slowed onto the shoulder so I can do an emergency stop. Luckily, I had a family vehicle behind me that helped me stop traffic while I got on the shoulder (accident averted). There was a wrench on the screen and I could not accelerated. I pulled over, put it in park and turned off the engine. We looked it over and nothing was wrong with it. Turned it back on and it made the partial return home.

At our half-way mark, I took it to garage to look at the coding and was told it had something to do with cruise control and not to use it. Next day, drove home the rest of the way and all was fine. So, I thought it was the cruise control.

Two days later I took the car to work (26 minute drive). The car made me stop 5 times because of this same issue. Stopped, turned it off, and then back on. Would drive for a bit and then stopped again. 5 times!!!!. It made me late to work. I left it at work since I didn't want to risk an accident going back home.

I bought this vehicle in April 2017. I used it as my "luxury" car so I barely used it since I had an every day driver. I took care of it and did not drive it often enough to break it. Will FORD fix this problem?

I was on my way to work on 9/2/16 making a left hand turn I lost acceleration in the intersection, thank God I was not rear ended as I was limping thru the intersection. I was able to make it to the side of the road where I sat for about an hour waiting for a tow. I was towed to a local shop who cleaned the throttle body and said the car was running. I drove the car home and did not drive the car or attempt to drive the car until 9/8/16. I backed out of my garage and made it about four houses past my house and the same thing happened. It took me 20 minutes to limp around the block and back into my garage. I most defiantly do not feel safe driving this vehicle. Next stop I guess is a Ford dealership. Everyone please make a complaint to https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ if you have had this problem. It seems like there are too many incidents.

Update from Sep 6, 2016: FYI Fords has reduced the price of the Throttle Body Motor Assembly from $394.00 to $94.00 as of September 1st, 2016. This seems a little suspicious.

The problem placed my wife in peril - she crawled along for 1/2 mile before finding a place to get off the road safely. I drove to her we turned off the car restarted it and the problem miraculously went away. thought he wrench symbol was still illuminated. Drove to Dealer and they replaced the throttle body. Amazingly, I found your site and which listed a 1/2 dozen other vehicles with the identical symptom/s. I suspect the 2011 Ford edge should be added to your short list. It's amazing to me that the issue is a replaceable electronic reader device and they replace the cast alloy housing. Obviously, a less expensive fix should be offered. I am loosing faith in Ford. Is there any advice on how to get Ford to reimburse me for the charges?

suddenly car deccelerates, "awd is off" message & wrench sign

i have 2011 ford edge limited with 54k mileage. Im going through same situation right now. car starts to decelerate all of a sudden and it comes with message all wheel drive off and a ranch sign. first time i had this issue was on 2/20/16 when i was 7 month pregnant and on my way to my baby shower. i called my dealer ad they said they can check the car but unless they can replicate the issue they might not be able to help at all. my husband started driving the car and it seemed problem just went away. well we were wrong because the problem came back again from last week and this time we were in highway and we had our 12 weeks old son in the car. the car is at the dealer currently and apparently they think the issue is related to throttle body and its going to cost me at least $700.00 and not covered by any types of warranty. I’m surprise ford hasn’t been sued multiple times already since its a known issue and lots of ford owner been affected by it. the service and customer satisfaction department are not willing to help or acknowledge that its a safety issue. i think they are waiting for something really bad to happen to their client before they are willing to fix it.

Driving down the interstate the car displays a wrench-shaped light in the instrument cluster and goes into "limp home mode," very dangerous as your driving in rush hour traffic. I was able to get to the side of the road, and shut the vehicle off and restart it and everything seemed okay.

Went home to do research and everything pointed to the Throttle Body. We cleaned the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, however it really did not look very bad. (It was pretty easy to get to the throttle body "there are several you tube videos on how to get to it".)

We also read all the reports that Ford can only fix this if they catch it while its happening because it does not save the code after the vehicle is restarted. After cleaning the throttle body, I drove the vehicle for a test and did not get more than 5 miles and the same issue occurred. This time I put the code scanner in before restarting the vehicle. One Code was picked up 'P2111" - Throttle Body Failure.

I ca not believe Ford has not recalled the Edge's for this issue, there are several hundred complaints on this site all for the same issue. I currently am unable to drive the car because it won't go more than 5 miles at a time when the wrench shows up. Called Ford on 6/7/2016 to order a new throttle body. Ford indicated that there is a back order on this part they currently have 7000 people on the waiting list. First expected to ship 6/30/2016.

Are you kidding me Ford, you have 7000 throttle body back orders and you think everything is fine, in the mean time I am now in a rental car waiting on the new part.

While riding on highway 441 in Mcintyre, GA on my way back from a funeral, all of a sudden my car stops accelerating and low engine oil pressure message displays. Cars and big 18 wheelers are zooming by, however I was able to coast to the side of the road where the car shut off. I tried starting the car back up several times and it would just shut back off. The police officer that stopped to assist checked the oil and confirm I had plenty of oil as I'd just had an oil change the day before. The car had to be towed to a nearby shop where it remains. I had to pay for a rental, now going on a week. I contacted Ford and described the problem. The representative was very quick to tell me...oh I see that you no longer have a warranty but let me look to see if I can find any recalls associated. After a very brief pause he came back online to tell me there are no recalls that would be associated with anything like this happening to the vehicle. This is absolutely ridiculous. I look online and see many other owners experience the same/very similar thing....come on Ford this is not just some freak thing that happened to me. This could very well have been a FAR MORE serious situation had those vehicles not been able to go around me in time to miss hitting my vehicle. Take some responsibility here. I've been a loyal FORD customer for YEARS!!!! And there is nothing they are willing to do other than shrug it off. Well I'm afraid that one day (if not already) your conscientious is going to be full of "we should have or we could have". Lives are at stake here, give me a break!

I went to leave the house yesterday and out of no where the car just stopped in the middle of the road after the AWD Off light came on with a little wrench light that also came on. Felt like the car also started to run very roughly but was stopped in the middle of the road. I put it in park and turned it off, waited a few seconds and turned the car back on and everything seemed fine. I had to get to work so I called my husband on the way and told him about the issue. I made it to work and then home again yesterday ok.

When he took it to go run an errand he had the same problem. I called the dealer to let them know and brought it down for service. Had the same issue again on my way to drop it off. At least this time I could get to the side of the road to turn it off and restart it again. Just talked to the dealer and he said he couldn't repeat the problem or find any code telling him what the problem was. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR NOW!!! I love Fords, I've owned several Explorers and this is my second Edge but this is a HUGE PROBLEM!! Stops in the middle of road without warning!!

I bought my car about a year ago as certified pre-owned and also bought the extended warranty. Now that I've seen this site, I'm calling him back to tell him what others have found.

Update from Nov 16, 2015: After I was told they couldn't find a code or duplicate the problem, I looked online for 5 minutes and I found several others who unfortunately had a similar issue. I advised the dealership that it was probably the throttle body but they insisted they needed a code. After almost a week of being at the dealership and not being able to find the issue, I gave permission to allow the mechanic to drive my car to his own house and then WHALA - he finally stumbled upon the problem. The issue was the throttle body, just like I told them the week before.

Either way, the car has been fixed and seems to be running great now. With no grief at all they covered all the charges for the service under the warranty (except my $50 deductible).

loses power, continues in "limp" mode, accelerator unresponsive.

2011 Ford Edge Limited was parked for several hours in hot sun, started up fine, drove onto highway at 25-30mph when suddenly lost power, accelerator became unresponsive, yellow wrench icon appeared on dash monitor, vehicle continued along in "limp mode" at probably 3 mph enabling me to pull off to shoulder, continued for a quarter mile in limp mode, came to a stop trying to figure out a solution by changing gears back and forth until engine finally stalled, immediately re-started and the problem was gone. The vehicle drove fine the rest of the way to the dealership where the mechanic could not bring up a computer code and was unable to replicate the problem. From reading other posts describing this same problem with their 2011 Ford Edge vehicles it is apparent that there is a reoccurring defect that needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. I now distrust the vehicle and am apprehensive about the problem happening while on I-95 surrounded by heavy traffic.

Update from Nov 5, 2015: Since initial post last week the problems has occurred 3 more times, always under similar circumstances to the first incident. Probably have to let things get worse before the Ford dealership will look at it under warranty that expires in February 2016.

My husband and I purchased our certified pre-owned 2011 Ford Edge in November 2014 with 63K miles, around April, we started to have problems. We had problems with some brake pad hardware (super rare apparently and happened 3 times to us), and 02 sensor and Sync issues. All of those I could have dealt with.

Around May I had the first problem with the car shutting down, car was running great, AC on, mild California weather, pulling away from a stop light and in the middle of the intersection I no longer had any acceleration, the yellow wrench came on, and I coasted into an oncoming lane to my left, was able to quickly turn the car off, restart and barely pull over to a parking lot. Hysterical I called Roadside assistance, had them tow it to my Local Ford (the one I purchased it from just a few months earlier), I knew something was wrong, but I allowed them to talk me out of checking it out as it would have cost me $200 + to even hook it up to the machine, and without a check engine light it was likely they would find nothing. My husband convinced me it was a onetime thing..and I stupidly let it go.

Less than a month later my husband was pulling out of our apartment parking lot, onto a very very busy street making a left hand turn, and the same thing happened, thankfully he was not hurt and was able to get it to the side of the road. (he quickly apologized to me for not fully trusting that I hadn't done something to the car the first time this happened)....Brought it in, and again, we were told no check engine light, and they have not heard of this happening before....A few days later the check engine light came on (o2 sensor), I brought it in, set up a service appointment. By the time my service appointment came around, the light had gone off and the technician never wrote down the code, so I had to wait until it came back on to take it in again.

It came back on thankfully and right around the time I lost acceleration for the 3rd time. This time my husband and I were on a busy road, pulling away from a light with heavy traffic behind us, we were able to quickly turn the car off and restart, we drove it home, and went to the service department the next day. They replaced the Purge Valve, and called it passed all their tests, so we went off driving assuming this has been fixed and all is well. This was August 4th.

On September 11th, I was driving 65-70mph on the freeway three lanes over (flow of traffic was 75) and lost all power again, this time wrench and red AWD off flashed on the system. I happened to be on the phone Sync system when this happening, and was able to have my husband talk me down from having a panic attack as I pass 2 lanes of traffic, and barely made it to the side of the road. Let’s just say, I was scared out of my mind and shaking. I took a chance that this was the same as last time, that once I restarted the car all was fine..I was able to get back on the freeway as I was only one mile from home at that point, I did test drives around my neighborhood that night, trying to get the stupid thing on camera so I could finally show Ford this is a huge problem, but to no avail…until the next morning when we drove 10 miles to our parents’ house, it cut out shuddered and completely stopped mid turn, again the yellow wrench, and AWD off symbol. We grabbed our phone and video tapped the whole thing, but this time the check engine light FINALLY came on. I had it towed the next day, and it currently sits there.

I found this forum yesterday, thank god, and told the mechanic about the Throttle Body…and what a coincidence…that is exactly what their diagnostics said. He then went on to tell me some BS about our Warranty being out and that it was going to cost around $760 to repair. Thankfully I was able to show him the extra 75K warranty we purchased at the time we bought the car, which hopefully will cover the costs and we will only be charged the $100 deductible (which is BS given the amount of times it’s been in the shop)

I need to make it known…I LOVE MY CAR and Ford in general..and feel that I wouldn’t be in this situation with Ford if it weren’t for the lack of understanding and competence of the technicians at Ford. Something needs to be done about this before somebody dies. I am tempted to ask the manager to drive his wife and kids around in my car for the next month to make sure it is SAFE enough for me, but of course that is just my emotions from having to deal with the anxiety of having an unreliable car…

MORAL OF THE STORY: Always buy an extended warranty, and never ever go against your gut.

While driving in the interstate at 45mph, out of nowhere, awd off light then wrench light comes on, vehicle loses all acceleration, engine idles rough, had to turn hazard light on, coast to a stop, put in park, turn off engine, and restart. Did this 3 separate times today alone....very dangerous on the interstate. Has done this in the past several times as well. Stopped at Advance Auto, the hooked up computer and code read, "throttle body" . I have read dozens more complaints about this same problem. Needs recalled before someone is hurt or killed. Very dangerous problem, not to mention expensive.

The vehicle lost power while driving. The dashboard displayed a wrench icon along with a message saying something like "SEE OWNERS MANUAL". I thought the engine died, but then realized I still had power steering and brakes. So the engine was running, but pressing the gas pedal had no effect. The engine was basically idling ("limp mode", I suppose) and I needed to find a place to coast to a stop out of traffic. After pulling over I shut the engine off and restarted it. The car ran fine after that. I had my 4 year old and 10 month baby with me.

After returning home I used the Torque app on my Android phone along with a Bluetooth scanner to check the vehicle for codes. There were none. I have not solved the problem yet.

My opinion? Ford needs to step up and recall these faulty drive-by-wire throttle systems.

Update from Dec 7, 2016: I ordered a new throttle body from Rock Auto and installed it myself. I've got about 10,000 miles on it now with no issues. Ford did issue a recall recently so it remains to be seen how they will handle my situation; I haven't visited the dealership yet. I hate those places. The part I bought was not genuine Ford (as if that means anything, if it did I wouldn't need to replace it) but it looked remarkably similar to the OEM part. The plastic and metal castings were identical except for the FoMoCo logo which was blanked out in the aftermarket part. My guess is they all come from the same place in China.

Certified Pre-Owned 2011 Ford Edge Limited AWD. Purchased in Nov. 2014. On Thursday, July 16, 2015 the same issue happened to my vehicle AGAIN for the FIFTH TIME. As I was at a red light, the light turned green and I started to accelerate, when the "AWD OFF " light with the wrench icon came on on the left hand side of the instrument panel. The light said "AWD OFF" and had a little wrench symbol on it. The car abruptly lost power and I just coasted. I was stuck in the middle of the intersection, with no shoulder to turn off onto.

I tried to press the gas pedal but nothing happened--there was no acceleration. The drivers behind me were very mad and the truck behind me was screaming at me. I put my hazard on and turned off the car. Immediately tried to restart and it had a hard time turning over, but eventually did. I drove until I could pull over on a side street, and parked and turned off the car to let it rest because it still wasn't running normal. I waited a few minutes then I restarted the vehicle and was able to make it to work. THIS TIME I could not take any photos since I was literally stuck in traffic!

As soon as I got into work, I called the dealership and took my car there right after work. They gave me a loaner car and the next day, Friday, July 17, I was told to pick up my car, that the dealership couldn't replicate the problem. They did a routing oil change as I asked, and drove my Edge around but couldn't get the problem to happen. I left work early to pick up my car, return the rental car and had my husband follow me home as I did not trust my truck making it home without losing engine power again.

As I left the dealership and got about a mile down the road, I was entering an intersection when without warning the "AWD OFF" light with Wrench icon came on, and I lost all power to the engine. I wrestled with the steering wheel to coast over to shoulder and left my vehicle ON. I immediately called the Dealership, they came out with the diagnostic machine, and was FINALLY able to retrieve a code. They drove my vehicle back to the dealership and gave me a new rental car.

Yesterday, Monday July 20, The service dept. called me and said that they drove my Edge around again, was the "AWD OFF" light came on and they VERIFIED it was the THROTTLE BODY! Exactly what I was telling them it probably was for the last month since I have read many forums with other Ford Owners experiencing the SAME PROBLEM. The throttle body replacement was NOT covered under my power train warranty and costed me $514.71 out of my pocket!

FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THESE DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODIES IMMEDIATELY BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED!

Certified Pre-Owned 2011 Ford Edge Limited AWD. Purchased in Nov. 2014. On On June 24, 2015 the same issue happened to my vehicle AGAIN. As I was driving about 50mph, a light came on on the left hand side of the instrument panel. The light said "AWD OFF" and had a little wrench symbol on it. The car abruptly lost power and I just coasted out of the way of traffic and onto the side of the road because there was no shoulder. I tried to press the gas pedal but nothing happened--there was no acceleration. My vehicle essentially "died" or stalled out without warning. While on the side of the road, the car idled rough like it was gonna stall out and was sputtering. I turned vehicle off, waited a few minutes and restarted the vehicle and it started right up like nothing ever happened. I took a photo of the light on the dash, sent photo to Dealership since they were aware that I had the issue because 2 weeks prior I went to the service dept. to get a diagnostic but nothing could be replicated.
