Edge 6-cyl

  • 59,000 miles
While driving on the highway, my Ford Edge lost acceleration. The engine remained idling but would not accelerate. I had to coast over to the side of the road, turn the engine off and restart. It would run fine for a few miles then repeat. I managed to get it to a Ford dealer who said it was a very common problem with the throttle body and it needed to be replaced but was not covered by my warranty. $610 later and many hours lost from work, I am a very unhappy Ford owner. Having researched this problem on line, I am finding it is a common problem with the Ford escape and now becoming more common with the Edge.

My wife was driving her 2011 Ford Edge on the highway at 60 mph with me and another passenger when all of a sudden the car began to decelerate very quickly. My wife shouted that the vehicle would not respond when she applied the accelerator pedal. We were in full traffic as cars sped beside us and came up quickly behind us slamming on their brakes to avoid hitting us. I turned on the hazard lights and told her to try to coast over to the shoulder because the vehicle would still not respond. She had to cut off several other vehicles to make it over to the shoulder but luckily no accident occurred. When we stopped, she again tried to apply the accelerator but still no response. She put the car in park and turned off the vehicle. She waited a few seconds and started the car and put it back in drive. The car finally responded and we were able to make it home without further incident. This was a very, very scary and dangerous situation. This car is well maintained and only had 51,000 miles. When this was happening, it reminded me of the Toyota incidents but instead of accelerating uncontrollably on the highway, we decelerated uncontrollably. I hope Ford looks into this situation more closely.

I was coming home from a soccer game and just lost power I pushed on the gas pedal nothing happened. Car loses power. Ford house had to replaced throttle body and recal PCM and allok. They explained it to me air was in it so it messed computer signal up. I don't know why I would have to pay to fix this issue. Ford needs to fix. 2011 Ford Edge has issues..updated 08/11/14

Re: 2011 Ford Edge limited: On way to dealer for requested service/repair re: Sudden and unexpected engine loss of power (stall - 3 episodes within 2 weeks) while underway the vehicle stalled 3 additional times. At time of stall (loss of engine power) the engine remained running; check engine light was on; "wrench" showed on dash instruments; all electrical power remained on and operating. Necessary to put hazard lights on, glide to stop off road, place transmission lever in neutral then in park and turn engine off. On restart, check engine light was on. I called advantage Ford dealership from road; they said ok to proceed to dealership. These incidents occurred in heavy traffic on us-1. no warning from car re: Engine rumbling or other before stall. Felt in danger but able to navigate safely. Internet search prior to dealer visit indicated "throttle body" problem with Ford escape primarily. Only 1-3 complaints re: Ford Edge.

My Edge kept shutting down unexpectedly on different occasions but would never set of a code just tell me the AWD is shutting down and would have no gas power to get off the road just hopefully I had enough speed going to coast of to the side of the road. And after shutting the car off then turn the car back on it would start and go again took it to the Ford dealers to put it on their diagnostic computer and did not show up showing an unexpectedly shut down.my Edge had probably done this a dozen times in the last 6months and yesterday it did it 4 times right in a row but this time it set of the engine light so I could read the code it produced which read throttle actuator locking up so I am going to replace the throttle body and see if this cures my problem.

Since the first year, when I leased it I've had trouble with the vehicle pulling and accelerating while driving. I've taken it to the dealership many times for this and they've stated no problem, but the last time I took it they found there was a problem. Unfortunately for me whatever they did was short lived, because it's back to pulling again and the kicking, like when you get rear ended by another car. My biggest fear is to one day be on the freeway and it pulls or accelerate and causes an accident.

While driving in traffic at approximately 40 mph, the engine suddenly went into safe mode and the vehicle slowed causing following traffic to take evasive action to avoid the car. Although it was difficult in traffic, I was able to move to the right lane and then into a gas station parking lot without significant incident. I shut the engine down and restarted. The wrench alarm was gone and the engine ran normally. I drove to a dealership where a throttle body issue was diagnosed. The total fee was $500 and the vehicle still drove normally.

The throttle body of this car was defective. I understand Ford has this problem with this car and other cars with the same maker of the part. The car will suddenly lose all function of the accelerator. No power whatsoever. I see this as a safety issue as if this happened in an intersection, on the highway in a middle lane, the car and passengers are helpless to make the car accelerate until the car is stopped, put in park, turned off then restarted. Then everything resets and the car will go again. I just shiver at this happening in 70 mph rush hour traffic in the middle lane and you can't drift over to the side. And you are adrift, completely helpless. It happened 6 times to my car in the past 3 weeks, once on a 2 lane highway and each of the others in town and in traffic. Luckily I was able to maneuver to the right side of the road and stop.. the diagnosis was throttle body and, yes, Ford has had problems with these and other models.. on top of that it's a $500 repair that should never happen to begin with. I see it as a definite safety issue.

Driver side door latch is not recognizing that the door is shut. Keeps saying door is ajar when it is clearly closed. As a result, I have to disconnect my battery every time I exit the vehicle to keep my battery from dying since the interior light stays on. When driving, the car door does not lock, the interior light stays on and the warning indicator incessantly beeps. Also, the AWD went out on the vehicle in the middle of heavy traffic, causing me to have to stop in the middle of the road because I obviously couldn't accelerate. This has happened multiple times. I took the vehicle to Ford 3 weeks ago and they stated they couldn't find anything wrong with the car, however, not even a week later, it did it again. I, two days ago, had my car towed to the same Ford dealership, where they are now replacing the throttle body. I have a 14 month old child, and the 4 times this has happened, he has been in the car. I have read online that I am not the only one this has happened to, yet there are no recalls for this make and model. Disappointed and irritated!

While driving at highway speeds twice, and 45 mph once, the engine completely stalled and would not accelerate. The warning "wrench" light illuminated with each occurrence. Car had to be coasted to a complete stop, turned off and then restarted. It was taken to dealership on each occurrence and I was told without a "service engine soon" light or with the "wrench" light illuminated there was nothing they could do. The car cannot be driven once it stalls so there is no way it can be driven to the dealership with this error displayed and once it is turned off this warning will not display once restarted. Our service department knows exactly that this is a throttle body problem but they are not authorized to replace it without this error documented through the computer diagnostics. My description is not enough. Sent away with a potentially hazardous and malfunctioning vehicle still under warranty. In contact with regional manager who should get back to me within 48 hours.

I pulled into a parking space. Felt the car move forward. Immediately turned the steering wheel to avoid the car directly parked in front of me. Accelerating to 25-30 miles per hour and not knowing what was happening, steered the car up the parking lane into a snow-covered field, circled and came back into another row of the parking lot. I had my foot on the brakes the whole time. When I got to the end of that row and realized I had no brakes, finally threw it in park. The car stopped, gears grinding. The vehicle maintained the same speed the whole time. If there would have been people or other car movement at the time, I don't know what would have happened. Ford inspected the vehicle and found nothing.

The throttle body failed while I was driving about 65 miles per hour on interstate 65. This fail happened at an extremely busy portion of I-65 as you leave Indiana and cross into louisville, ky. Luckily, the time of day was approximately 1:30 P.M. so traffic was rather light. If this had happened during rush hour, I would not have been able to get my car off the interstate and over to an emergency lane. Who knows what that result would have been - a horrible crash - possibly death. Ford really needs to step up and recall the throttle body part. As I have researched this on the internet, I see many instances where Ford appears to have several models (old and new) that are experiencing failed throttle body components. This is unacceptable and will surely cause additional fatalities (they have already had one fatality due to this part failure).
