About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Under acceleration the vehicle will sometimes enter into limp mode. Vehicle will violently brake and come to a halt and the driver can only accelerate up to +/-5MPH to be able to pull off to the side of the road. The deceleration when this happens is sudden and violent. During this event the steering wheel is difficult to turn. ALL dash warning and fault lights flash during the malfunction. You have to pull over, shut the vehicle off, and then restart. This has happened with our two kids in the vehicle while merging onto a freeway. I have brought it to Ford 4 times. The first time they said a harness was loose and they fixed it. Other times they blamed my use of a narrower diameter winter tire, but it happens with the stock wheels as well. The malfunction continues to happen. They have not been able to duplicate the issue, so they asked me to drive around with a OBD2 scanner attached. When the malfunction happens, no error codes are reported. The Ford technician said that if it were their vehicle, they would not drive it with their children in the car. Ford has had the vehicle for almost a month now and have requested we pick it up because they cannot duplicate the malfunction and have suggested that I drive until it happens again, which is pointless as the malfunction does not trigger an error code. My wife refuses to drive the car, especially with our children in it. I have talked to Ford corporate, and they said they would escalate, but now they are not returning my emails or answering their phones. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. It may be helpful to know that when I first started bringing the vehicle in for this malfunction, it was still 100% under warranty. Thank you.

I am told my APIM module needs to be replaced. My touch screen will go black and then come back on. I am unable to use handsfree phone due to system not staying connected to my bluetooth. The radio will not turn off or on and sometimes will come on and be blaring while driving. The GPS does not work at all and if it decides to even show up on the screen will not follow streets at all. The warning sounds and lights will go off randomly while driving even if I am not close to something on the sides of my car. My backup cameras do not work all the time. The cruise control will not keep distance and will stop working randomly. The entire touch screen will not respond to any touch. These items are very distracting and unsafe at best. There has been no accidents to cause these problems. The manufacturer has not been able to help me locate any replacement parts despite pre-paying for the expensive module. I have been waiting 6 weeks without anyone being able to tell me when a module is expected. Meanwhile I do not know what else will stop working on my car. Ford has had a history of problems with the APIM modules and there was even a class action suit that was won by the consumer for the same thing in Lincoln vehicles. I just want the part and for my car to be fixed.

Car battery is dead; fifth time in 3.7 years. This can happen after sitting a few days or just overnight. After being charged by aaa, it appears to be fine and the dealer service dept cannot find anything wrong on their diagnostic tests. Batter was replaced after the 4th time, but the car died again 1.5 years later. Dealer tried to fix by replacing a shift selector switch (twice) but this did not solve the problem.

Alerts that engine coolant temperature is too high. Makes smoke come from the hood. Countless bottles of antifreeze just run through it. It causes the whole car to just shut off from the heat while in motion.

The failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the leonardtown Ford dealer (301-475-3111, 26322 point lookout rd, leonardtown, md 20650) where the technician performed a diagnostic test and replaced the battery but the failure recurred. I purchased this car new with 10 miles driven only 14 months ago. At 3100 miles it lost all electric/electronic/engine power as I was traveling approximately 40 miles on a city street with traffic! the engine light, service wrench light and dinging sounds flashed; the vehicle decreased in speed, and shut down, making it difficult to steer. Fortunately, I was able to coast off the street into an open driveway prior to its complete stop of the vehicle from loss of all power! then there were absolutely no power; ignition would not start; no lights, no power of any kind. After calling Ford service hotline, and about 2.5 hours waiting for a tow truck in the hot heat, I tried the ignition - the power was back. Nevertheless, the vehicle was towed to Ford dealership where purchased. The next day their diagnostics and two test drives 'found no problems with the vehicle'. I informed the service manager at wyatt johnson Ford, just because they were unable to find a problem, doesn't negate the fact that something is definitely wrong with the vehicle to stop abruptly as it did; like a computer shutting down completely. I do not feel comfortable driving this vehicle knowing this could happen again with dire consequences and want to report this hazardous problem to inform the public accordingly! there are no pictures to accompany this complaint. I await some information on this vehicle. There have been several people who shared similar problems with Ford, Nissan and other vehicles. I need to know what will be done to correct this problem further. Thank you.

Upon returning from an 8 day absence, I went to start the car and it was totally dead. Tried to jump it and while internal accessory lights came on it would not start. Called Ford and they sent a tow truck, who jumped it with a hand held lithium battery and it started. Had the tow truck follow me to the dealer, where with the drivers door open, the entire car went dead again. The dealer was going to replace the battery but it would not fail according to the new Ford battery failure criteria and I suggested simply placing it back in the car and I would continue to drive it locally. The car seems to have an electrical issue, as I have noticed when I get into the car, I readjust myself by placing my left arm on the arm rest, door and my right hand on the center console and center myself to the steering wheel. In that process I hear the door locks go off, from pushing down on the arm rest, door. My turn signal also loses the clicking sound from time to time and now I notice the turn signals light up when I place my hand in the door handle to unlock the drivers door. I enjoy driving the car and will continue to work with my dealer to see what can be done. My concern is being out of town or leaving it at the air port and having to dealing with a dead car. It acted as if the entire battery had been discharged, simply sitting in the garage.

Vehicle was parked and off. We loaded all luggage into the car and closed the doors. Both keys were in the diaper bag. The automatic door locks engaged and we had no way to get into our car or call for help, as our phones were in the car. This type of door lock does not require you to push the fob button. You just have to touch the door handle while keys are in your possession. But the car is not supposed to lock if the key is within the vehicle. We had to call aaa to get the door unlocked. Fortunately our infant and dogs had not been loaded yet. This is the second time the locks have engaged in their own while the key is in the car. Also of note; the doors display a small red led when locked normally. The red light was not illuminated when this happened, which makes me believe there was an electrical issue/malfunction.

After completing a turn and accelerating to merge into traffic, the vehicle suddenly slammed on its brakes and cut off the accelerator pedal. Every time I tried to accelerate, it would slam violently on the brakes again. As this was happening, all driver assistance warning icons were intermittently flashing on the instrument panel I coasted to the side of the road, engaged park, shut off the vehicle and restarted and it was working fine. I had the dealership look at it and they claimed it was a loose electrical connection that caused it. A few months later, the same thing happened again. This is extremely disconcerting, and in my opinion extremely dangerous. Thankfully in either incident my toddler son was not in the vehicle.

My automatic door locks are flickering going down the road and sitting in the driveway. No one has the key faub pressing on it or anything.

This is the 4th time over the last several months that car battery has gone completely dead after sitting for a few days in our garage. Will not start. Local dealership and Ford unable to fix issue at this time. Vehicle towed from our garage on October 5th. Local personnel at dealership unable to recreate the problem. Ford has dispatched technician/engineer to the dealership to help help identify the problem. Vehicle is six months old with 2800 miles.
