I stopped at a traffic light and the SUV's motor cut off without any noise or warning. All dashboard lights remained on and looked normal. I tried to start it but had no crank and no start. Managed to get it off the street with a little help.
We smelled something like a burned wire/electronic smell. Buddy has two different car diagnostic computers/analyzers (handhelds) but the SUV will not communicate and both diagnosers come up with an ERR value. He thinks it may be the THEFT device locking out, but that indicator on the dash display panel will light up when the key is turned and then go out, so it doesn't look like that is an issue. Battery/alt all look good. He has a contact at the Ford shop so will update when I get more info.

Problem started with the headlights dimming when I would accelerate. Then the dash lights would dim all the lights were acting as if there was a loose wire somewhere. Had the battery checked and recharged. The problem started again and got worse. My wife was driving the car home from work and the car just died while driving down the highway. Major safety risk, had the vehicle towed to Pep Boys and they tested the full diagnostic. The problem ended up being the alternator. Had a new one put in and have not had a problem since with it. Everything is working as new again.
One note on the Ford's, too replace anything under the hood is $$$ since the parts are made hard to access. The part normally is 1/3 the cost of the whole bill, the remaining 2/3 is the labor to gain access to the part.
