Another fairly common issue. Found how to fix it in the forums. ABS light and slick road light(?) come on. Tone ring is broke. Turn the wheel all the way right and you can see the tone ring at the end of the axial nearest the wheel. grab a hold of it and try to move it. If it does its broke. Took about 30 mins to fix. Pull the wheel. Knock the axial out of the knuckle. Pull the old one off and knock a new one on carefully with a brass hammer or the like.

Ford are a bunch of bastards, I said I would never buy another ford after my 97 F150. Now again we have another lemon. I say Ford should have recalled this issue and re- engineered this part. Well done ford in creating job security for your employees through replacement part costs, this one is a gold mine.

This abs and flashing 4x4 light is obviously a reason to put a recall on this vehicle!! It's total crap that so many people have this SAME issue! I need to find someone reliable and honest to take this car to be fixed and it won't be Ford!!

I just had my pads and rotors replaced last year and there is a bad vibration when braking down hills. And to top it off my ABS light and 4x4 light continues to flash. I have an appointment tomorrow. Better not be to bad.

Found out that the ABS and 4WD lights coming on together doesn't mean they are each a problem. There is apparently a speed sensor on the front axle that broke. I'm told it's made of a soft metal and after 96K miles, it wears out. The upside, it costs less to replace this than the 4WD and ABS systems. The downside, the 1/2 axle needs to be replaced as I'm told this is sold as a unit (axle and sensor). Cost estimate given to me - $500. I also found that my front brakes are also shot (think they've been done maybe once in the 96K miles?), so there's another $500 estimate to have new rotors and pads. Find a trustworthy mechanic to check your vehicle. I'm fortunate that I have one.

My mechanic did my brakes for the bargin price of 615.00. I thought this would solve the ABS light problem but within a week the light was back on. Off and on it would take a while to come on when the car had been off for a while. I have an appointment to get something fixed on the axle and the mechanic thinks the 4x4 light blinking might be solved by fixing the axle but i guess we will see since other people have not had any luck going this route

My 2005 Ford Escape Limited SUV has 78,000kms on it and the ABS light on the dash is stuck on and also the 4x4 is flashing on the dash as well. I have taken it to be checked out using the diagnostic machine to only be told that they reset the computer sensor and everything is fine. When I picked up my SUV, I just pulled out of the driveway of the garage and then the lights again were stuck on and flashing. I went back to the garage and was told that chances are it's the electrical system. My SUV is now in the shop until they can figure out what exactly is wrong. The mechanic said it may be the wiring harness and if it's not the wiring harness it will be the ABS module(which is quite pricey). I priced out how much a new ABS module would cost from the dealership $338.40(the part is ONLY at the dealership--go figure--gouge city)......
And now the waiting game begins and the very expensive bill .... to find out exactly what is wrong

This was a pain because I didn't know what was wrong with my 4x4 since I live in Wisconsin and Mr. Winter is dumping the white stuff in 4-12 inches at a time.
Dealer told me to wash my truck as the sensor eye might be dirty and told me not to worry about it.

abs light came on followed by the 4X4 light flashing was told by ford garage that this is a very common problem caused by the" toner rings"falling off the front axle at aprox 40,000miles repair would cost a couple to several hundred dollars depending on weather they could replace the rings or had to replace the axles.if this problem is so common the product is obviously defective and should be repaired by the dealers at no cost but they won't do it

abs came on after 25 miles then 4x4 light comes on they must be related.
After you turn car off lights go off. what is up with that?

ABS and 4WD light keeps coming on in my 2005 Ford Escape. Had the brake sensor replaced and the Tone Ring replaced. But the lights are still coming on. I have new tires, brakes, rotors. What else is going to go wrong. I can't seem to get the lights cleared. And I am tired of paying to put it on the diagnostic machine. I think Ford should fix this problem for FREE.
