It was Sunday afternoon and I was leaving church. It was about 31 degrees out and snowing but not heavy enough that I had to clean off any snow. I drove off the church parking lot and sat at a red light when all of a sudden the back window Just Exploded! I got out to see what happened and glass was every where but mostly in my vehicle. A big city truck was sitting behind me at the light, I asked him did you see what happened? He said "the window just exploded... never seen anything like that before." I have a german shepard dog that rides along with me many times, just happy he wasn't in the back when this happened nor was anyone sitting in the back. My neighbor called the junk yard and ordered the window for me. They replaced it in about an hour for $200 Ford should be paying for this because it's their negligence and not mine.

While driving down the road in the dark on my way to work I heard a loud bang. It took me a few seconds to realize the back window had exploded. I really could not understand why this happened until I started looking online and found it is a fairly common occurrence.
I got plastic and tape and did a temporary repair, this being winter in Canada. I will look into getting it repaired on the weekend. I have been driving forty years and this has never occurred before.
I wonder why Ford is not doing anything about this?

I live just outside of Cincinnati and we just got hit with six inches of snow. I had to run to the gas station so I cleared off my entire vehicle, very well I might add, and put down my front wipers. As I was driving to the gas station it was just a normal drive. Nothing unusual about it! Once I got there I bought my items and put fuel in my vehicle. I made it off the property of the gas station and onto the road when I heard my back glass shatter. It was a sound of explosion!
My first thought was that maybe someone hit me. I'm at a complete stop and the only car on the road! What happened!? I got out of my vehicle and walked around back to get a look at it. Glass was everywhere; on the top of the vehicle, on the bumper, and inside!!! If my son were in the back seat I wouldn't just be complaining on this site, believe me!
I got home to take a closer look. The glass around the defrost cord looks burned. Why? I cleaned the car of snow and had not turned the defrost on. The left window show was just hanging there as limp as can be. I spent an hour trying to cover it with a blanket, and I'm hoping that we don't get any rain or snow before I can fix it.
Of course the first thing I do when I come inside is look online to see if anyone else has experienced this problem, and they have! There is an "investigation" that began in February 2011 for this very same issue! I assume Ford is trying to put the blame on the cold temperature but what about the people in Hawaii who have expressed the same issue!? It's now March 2015 and I want something done, Ford! I'm also expressing my concern and reporting my "Back Glass Explosion" to the Center for Auto Safety and NHTSA.
William Ford and Mark Fields, I want this fixed!

Vehicle was parked overnight in the garage. Went to run errands and found shattered glass everywhere! It was like the window just exploded for no apparent cause or reason! It was a relatively warmer evening - mid 30's last night and had no prior issues or problems.

I have a 2007 Ford Escape....went out Friday morning to find the window had exploded during the night...I really think the shock absorbers that are attached to the glass are causing the problem with them...one of the shock absorbers was laying against the back of the car outside the window so I compressed it so that it was inside the window before taking it in for repairs...I have to tell you it was hard to compress.....I think using the rear window defogger with the heating and cooling over and over plus the outside temperature changes plus having the pressure from the shocks pushing against the glass on both sides gets to be too much at some point.....not happy about this since we've only had the car a year.

Girlfriend was out shopping and had loaded the back with boxes and was driving home. There was a thunder storm and it was raining fairly severely. Temp in the 80's and windows were fogging. She had turned on the rear windshield wipers and had just turned the defroster on to clear fogging.
She called me screaming and crying that she thought the car had been hit my lightning and the rear window was shattered. After I got her calmed down she stopped at a garage to get the window temporarily covered. In the meantime, I got on the internet and saw all the explosions that were reported.
It's fortunate she didn't have an accident when it happened and that there was no one in the back. There was glass everywhere and her dog sometimes rides in the back. Something is seriously wrong that this type of thing is happening.

I had just started driving on a fairly cold day (maybe minus 2 degrees Celsius) and had the rear defrost on. I stopped for gas right near home (turned the car off with key out). Less than a minute after I pulled out of the gas station the rear window exploded.
I assume that the rear defrost goes off when you turn the car off, and doesn't turn on until you manually turn it on again??? I didn't turn it back on, so I think it was off when the window exploded. I was going slow - maybe 40 or 50 km an hour. No bumps on the road or anything like that.
The guy behind me slammed on his brakes - didn't look like it effected him otherwise.
Thankfully it only cost $450, but that's still money I wish that I didn't have to spend!

Wow, comforting (I guess) to know we're not alone. Trying to figure out what happened...vandalism, accident, heat? But, it wasn't any hotter than the previous couple months. We stepped outside to see the rear window of our Ford Escape was totally shattered, glass all over the ground and inside the car. It took the two of us about an hour to clean up the tiny bits of glass from off the gravel parking lot so no one would cut themselves. Very frustrating...will call the dealership in the morning to see what they think I should take it and to learn what it might cost me.

I was parked in front of Kmart waiting for my sister to come out of the store. In the vehicle was my niece and nephew. The car was running but once again in park. All of a sudden the back window EXPLODED !!! We thought we were being shot at or someone threw a bomb at us, the EXPLOSION was extremely loud and freaked us all out, but we soon realized this wasn't the case for the only thing around us were 2 people, one elderly man coming out of the store and one elderly lady going in, there were no cars driving by. The temp was about 30 degrees, and we had driven the car at least 30 miles before this. I plan on taking this to ford motor company and my insurance company. When i called the dealer in Fenton Michigan (lasco ford) where i bought the car they said they never heard of such a thing and have directed me to call a number, i will be doing this next. I have worked for ford motor company for over 30 years and i have driven fords all my life. I am hoping that they step up to the plate and take responsibility for this problem. when i checked on the internet after being directed by one of my nephews, I have found out this has happen many a time to others, if my sister would have come out the store just 30 seconds to a minute sooner she would have had that blow up right in her face and causing serious injuries. Owners of this vehicle need to be aware of this so that no one gets hurt. As of right now im having to cover what my insurance wont, and i am not happy with that, there needs to be a re-call.

I was on my way to work this morning and had been on the road for about 30 minutes when suddenly I heard a loud POP and the sound of glass shattering. My wife heard the noise on the cell and asked what happened. At first I had no idea and then looked in the mirror to see only wires hanging and no rear window. It was cold - single digits and I had my defrost on earlier. At first I was going to chalk it up to the cold and/or the defrost but the glass repair people indicated this is not the first time they have seen this and always with the Ford Escape.

Waiting at a traffic light. The car was warm, the weather was cool and raining, but no frost. Did not have the rear defroster on. Heard a loud explosion like a gunshot and saw that the rear window exploded out. We have very little glass on the inside. Mostly all on the outside and the rear bumper. One of the hinges that holds the glass in place fell out of the car from the explosion.
We also have a crack in the front windshield that runs across the windshield from driver side to passenger side in an arc low down on the window.

When I went online this morning to research the cost of the repair, imagine my surprise to find that others had this exact situation happen to them. I thought it was an isolated incident! My car was just sitting there, parked, no previous damage. We are having record heat but nothing that should cause something like this to happen. The back window just exploded!!!! Luckily no one was in the car nor was anyone around it. Ford should most definitely be responsible for this.

On Saturday morning I woke up to leave the house, and noticed that the rear windshield has exploded. The temperature was in the upper 20's F. The car was park in the driveway overnight and turned off. I called the police thinking it was vandalism, but there was no evidence of that. There was a faint burnt smell in the back of the car. I could not complain to the dealer as it happen on the weekend. I wll have to wait till they are open.

Walked out from working all night to see glass everywhere! A co-worker actually stayed by the truck to tell me the glass exploded as he walked by it. Ford needs to recall this now! I strongly believe the gas shocks are the issue. I think they build up pressure from temp fluctuations and blow out the rear glass. I would recommend removing them until Ford fixes this issue.
