Went to close the rear glass hatch and it just exploded. My son and I ducked because it scared the crap out of us and we had immediately thought someone shot the window out. I called the police immediately. Several people stopped to make sure we were ok, while entering and exiting the grocery store. One particular woman told us this sort of thing had happened to a friends vehicle, same make and model. She said it was caused from the electrical component in the rear defrost. As you can see by the pics, the right shock lift was blown off along will all the other parts dangling. Glass blew to 4 parking spaces around us. My son and I had slivers of glass all over us and I was cut.
I called FORD and my AAA Auto Insurance, who both told me I had to wait till Monday because both claims dept. were closed for the weekend. On Monday, I took my vehicle to FORD collision center and was told that I would need to turn it into insurance because this was not covered by FORD, which I would have assumed it would have been. I then called AAA Insurance and was told it would not be covered under my policy with them either.
I am INFURIATED with FORD for not owning up to what is blatantly obvious their problem. Either the right shock lift locked up and failed causing the window to shatter OR there was an electrical problem with the rear defrost. Two days prior to this happening, the rear blinker went out, so I don't know if this was a warning or just normal use. FORD claim representative DID SAY that it is obvious that something malfunctioned causing the glass to exploded, but refuses to take responsibility. Now I have a $1000 estimate to get it fixed.

my 2008 escape is 14 days past warranty with barely 32000 miles. I'm putting my groceries in the back when the whole damn back hatch falls down on me. Yes, I got hurt. and it took two of us to get the groceries in. One to hold it open and one to load the groceries in. As soon as I got the frozen stuff put away, I drove straight to the ford dealer where I was told too bad it didn't happen 2 weeks ago. The repair will cost $109 plus taxes and it will not be covered by the warranty. so, I go home and call Ford , to plead my case, and they tell me no way. Obviously, they have mastered the art of building a car to begin falling apart 2 weeks after the warranty...and I guess Ford Motors is in such financial trouble that the $109 would be too big a burden for them to keep a satisfied customer . This is a really dangerous defect that could cause serious bodily harm!!! Has this happened to other escape owners? My shoulder is killing me. Thank goodness I wasn't standing up straight. It could have snapped my neck.

The back window from the hatch no longer stays open. It has fallen on my head and I can no longer use it.
