My husband got home with my Ford Escape from running errands, approx half hour later we heard a big bang and ran out front to see what had happened and discovered my rear window had exploded. The front driver window was opened, so heat wasn't a factor. Noticing this doesn't seem to be a new problem from what I can see on web sites. Seems to me this is a big safety issue and needs to be addressed by ford. Ford asked me to bring it in to have a service guy check it out, so I'm gonna do that tomorrow, so we'll see what happens

On (or close to) April 30, 2012, my husband heard a loud noise (like a gun shot) from inside our house. He looked out the front window at the driveway and saw little black things on it, he thought the driveway had exploded. When he went outside he realized it was the rear window on our 2008 Ford Escape. It exploded just sitting in our driveway, we were no where near the vehicle. It was not cold outside (as you can see in the pictures), nor was it hot (it was Springtime), there was no reason for this to happen.

I called and had it repaired through the glass coverage on our auto insurance, but thought I would let Ford know what happened. So I Googled the problem, and what do you know, it seems to be an ongoing problem for the Escapes!!! So once again I thought Ford would like to know it was happening and sent them an e-mail. I couldn't believe the response I got!! They sent me an email asking details about the car (year, make, model, mileage) etc... I thought "Great they are going to investigate the problem". But no, to my disappointment, they sent me another e-mail to let me know my vehicle was no longer under warranty and Ford would not be paying to fix it.

So I sent them an e-mail telling them something to the affect of "look you idiots, I wasn't asking for you to pay for it, I was trying to let you know there was a problem!!!". Something like that anyway, I tried to stay calm so that they would look into it. I know that one of the stories I read online told about how the window exploded with their child in the backseat in a carseat! That is why I wanted Ford to know - I wanted them to know before someone got hurt. This window didn't just break, it EXPLODED all over, inside the car, outside the car, up to 2 feet behind the vehicle!!

If you can do anything to get this information to them, please, please do so. If I have to replace it again I do not think I will be so quiet about it. I have already detoured a couple of my fellow coworkers from buying an Excape (they were looking at them).....

Drove into city to do some Christmas shopping and while inside the store, the shop owner came up to me and asked if I owned the silver Ford Escape parked out front. He informed me that another customer had just came in and said that the back glass had just blown out all over the parking lot. I was dumbfounded when I saw the damage and could not believe my eyes as there was no rationale reason for this to have happened. The lady that reported this said she thought at first there was an explosion on the highway in front of the store. I had used the rear and front defroster first thing this morning while letting my car warm up but then it was turned off as the morning had begun to warm to 42 degrees. The glass was strewn in approx 10 ft radius , the hatch lifting mechinism was blown out and many pieces had a brown and green color to them where the heating grid ran through which I believe was caused from being overheated. Shaken and upset I contacted my Ins. Co and was informed that I had a $500.00 deductible, but they could get me into a body shop tomorrow and have the window replaced for $480.00. By now I am totally at my wits end. Decided to call my dealership whom I have been a loyal customer to for nearly 30 years. The body shop manager met me out front with a camera and first thing he did was take the window lift mechinism off each side of the blown out "hole". I advised him that taking a picture of the damage without the window lift arms would not present an accurate account of the actual damage. The guy informed me that he was only trying to save my paint job from being "scratched". He finally attached the lift arms and took a picture of the hole and that was it ! He did not inspect the glass. or any of the wiring or anything else . He didn't even seem concerned as to what had caused this to happen. After I followed him into his office I was told that he will not be sending in the picture to the adjuster because my warranty had expired 5 months ago. (I have 33,000 miles on this 2008 Escape, but the 3 years came first). By now I am really mad and demanded to speak with his boss. I was also informed that I was not covered by warranty and there was nothing they could do for me. I then called Corporate Headquarters and was told same thing. After I explained to him that the dealership manager didn't even bother to examine the damage, he told me that if I could get get an authorized Ford dealership to determine that it was a defect, then "maybe" Ford might help share the repair cost.

I am extremely mad that Ford cannot step up to the plate and take care of this problem. If this would have happened on the interstate it would have caused some serious harm to myself and or others. This is a problem that I found out is happening alot and for many years past by doing alot of searches on the matter. This needs attention ASAP, These explosions are spontaneous and happen through no fault of the owner. I don't expect to purchase a new vehicle and have windows explode. And furthermore why has there not been any recalls on this ?? Please if anyone has had this happen and have gotten reimbursed for the damage., please let me know how you got it done.
