Escape

  • 51,000 miles
Entering the highway I speed up to merge with traffic. I get to about 45 mph and loose acceleration power. With the engine still running but having no acceleration a strong thud happened. Seemed like the gears finally caught...but still no acceleration and then the engine immediately revved to almost 8000 RPM...and still no acceleration. I managed to get over to the shoulder and turned it off. This has happened two other times (one time it also stalled completely). Each time there is nothing that the dealer can tell me. It seems to "remedy" itself after each paid scan. The vehicle scan doesn't show anything. I'm very tired of paying for scans that show nothing. I feel very unsafe in my own car.

Parked the vehicle in my driveway. Vehicle was in park when I turned the ignition off. Vehicle began rolling backwards as I was attempting to leave the vehicle. Vehicle rolled backwards into a tree damaging the liftgate, rear bumper and exhaust components. The Ford recall for this issue covered Ford Escape 2013 models manufactured in their louisville, ky plant between May 2013 and September 2013. My Ford Escape was built in April 2013. I am curious as to what changed in the manufacturing process between April and may that would exclude my vehicle from the recall.

131,000 miles transmission started slipping and as of 7/15/2018 transmission is gone this seems to be very common with the 1.6 liter engine I had taken it in when it started to slip and Ford dealer ship started they could not find anything wrong with it until warranty was up and transmission is completely out now I'm stuck with a loan and a vehicle I cannot drive very disappointed with Ford I wish I would have known they changed the motor and tranny 3 times in 2013 very dissatisfied should be a recall on these transmissions

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 18V471000 (power train). The contact stated that the vehicle was unable to shift out of park into any other gear, which left the contact stranded for hours. A loaner vehicle was provided by mcgrath Ford (4001 1st ave SE, cedar rapids, ia 52402, (319) 366-4000, 319-364-0181) as of August 27, 2018. The dealer stated that the parts were unavailable for the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and had not been repaired. The failure mileage was not available. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

Escape

  • 50,250 miles
I bought the car 09/03/13. On 05/26/16, I was driving home from work & on a parkway as I was accelerating to 45 mph, the engine revved to approximately 6500 rpms without engaging the gear, then shifted. About 15 minutes later, I stopped at a light on a three-lane road (40 mph speed limit). When the light turned green, I pushed the gas pedal and the engine revved but did not engage; I slid backward. I braked to stop from hitting the car behind, let them pass, then turned off the car, as I smelled burning. I turned the car on & pushed the gas pedal until eventually it engaged in first gear & was able to drive enough to get off the road. The car had to be towed to the dealer, where there was a leak found to be due to tsb 3B16-0043. Transmission had to be disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt due to high amounts of debris. Even after the repair, the car would still shudder intermittently when I shifted from reverse to drive & went to accelerate. On 02/12/18, the transmission failed again while I was in motion at approx. 25 mph in stop & go traffic. I pushed the gas, the transmission didn't respond; the engine just revved. I was still in motion, slowed down, then pushed the gas again & it shuddered then shifted. I pulled over immediately & put the car in park. I tested it by trying to drive forward; the car slid backwards. I didn't push the pedal enough to engage first gear as I didn't want to cause damage. I was again towed to the dealership, and again the transmission needed a teardown, cleaning, & rebuild due to debris. Based on both tickets, I believed the center support is a defective part; I learned today there is a new recall, 18V471000, for a bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission. Unknown if this is the cause. Car is again shuddering when shift R to D then accelerating. I have scheduled an appointment.

Escape

  • 62,000 miles
Pop-up messages on console: "transmission fault. Service now. Reducing power to reduce engine temperature." Although there was not a perceptible difference in driving, I took my vehicle to service immediately. Results from dealer service advisor: "it appears the torque converter is slipping inside the transmission, the trans over temp light is coming on as a result of the converter slipping, so ultimately it will need the transmission rebuilt with the torque converter replaced. I know you are just outside of warranty and the repair is quite unexpected and costly. Ford has replied back and stated they will assist $1,569.12, which would leave you responsible for $1,000 toward the repair."

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. When the contact shifted the vehicle into reverse, the engine stalled. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 18V471000 (power train); however, the parts to do the recall repair were not available. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the shifter cable was fractured, but the vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000.

1. mis-firing causing the entire vehicle to rock, seen mainly when the engine is in gear with the break engaged at a stop signal. 2. sudden over-revving seen on the tachometer. 3. the over-revving usually precedes the engine temperature spiking into the critical area. This is most likely to happen on inclines. Pulling over, shutting down the engine allowing it to cool down for 10-15 minutes, then everything is fine. I have learned to watch for the over-revving, then apply the brake to stop the over-revving. Then has allowed me to keep the over-heating in check.

Escape

  • 71,000 miles
On wed August 22nd, 2018, I was running errands. I left a store, entered my 2013 Ford Escape titanium, and began to slowly back out of my parking space. After backing out of the space, I put the shifter into D and began to try to drive forward, but my vehicle instead continued to roll backwards. I immediately pressed my brake pedal, which stopped it from rolling backwards, and put the shifter into P. though my vehicle showed that it was in park, it continued to roll backwards if I took my foot off the brake. I was able to reverse my car down the parking lot and back into a parking space at the end of the lot. All the while, my 2013 Escape showed that it was in park. I turned my vehicle off, but had to engage the emergency brake to ensure that it would not continue rolling backwards. When I tried to turn the vehicle back on a minute later, I was not able to push the brake pedal down. It became locked, and I couldn't turn the engine on, shift, or do anything except turn press the ignition button to turn on/off the radio/ac/lights/electrical, etc. (during this whole time, there was never any warning lights lit or any indication at all that a problem was about to occur or currently occuring.) I had it towed to the nearest Ford dealership, where they confirmed that it was the shifter assembly/cable that broke, which is the exact issue in the recall Ford issued on over 500,000 2013 Ford Escapes in July 2018. However, despite my vehicle having the exact mechanical failure as described in the recall notice, I was told by Ford when I contacted the manufacturer directly, that my vehicle was assembled at a plant that has not been added to the recall. Obviously this issue is more vast and widespread than Ford is willing to admit. Because my Escape is from a factory that hasn't been added to the recall yet, Ford refuses to cover the cost of repairs. This is incredibly frustrating.

Escape

  • 71,000 miles
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. While reversing at unknown speeds, the gear shifter became stuck in the drive position; however, the vehicle continued to move in reverse. The brake pedal was applied, but failed to stop the vehicle. The emergency brake was engaged to stop the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to san tan Ford (1429 E motorplex loop, gilbert, AZ 85297, (480) 821-3200) where it was diagnosed that the shifter cable fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

Escape

  • 48,000 miles
The vehicle is a 2013 with less than 48K miles on it. The problem started with rolling backwards when starting from a stop on a hill and with a hesitation then a slight jerk when starting from a stop. That happened off and on one day then cleared up for about a month. When it started again it would also have sluggish acceleration like it had a shifted into a gear that was too high, or would wind up like it had shifted into neutral. Again, it was intermittent like it was a loose wire or bad circuit. Then it started intermittently making a kind of a grinding noise and shortly after there was a loud noise and the transmission was toast.

Escape

  • 96,000 miles
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. While pulling into a parking space, the gear was shifted into park, but remained in drive. The contact stated that the instrument panel showed that the gear was in park. The failure caused the vehicle to move forward. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact applied the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who readjusted the bushing cable, but the failure recurred. The contact called lindsay Ford at 888-457-7005 (located at 11250 veirs mill rd, wheaton, md 20902) and was informed that the part was not available for NHTSA campaign number: 18V471000 (power train). The contact received the recall notice two days later. The manufacturer was notified and was not able to confirm when the parts would become available. The contact was not provided a loaner vehicle and the failure was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

Every time we come to a complete stop the Escape stalls and you need to re-start the car. I've brought to a dealer and they think its the torque convertors which is inside the transmission. Some Escapes with this same year have been recalled already but when I checked with my dealer they said my has not. They estimated the cost of the fix at $4000.

My kids and I were in the drive thru at schlotzky's when I put my car in 'park' to order. Once my order was complete and I was ready to pull forward, I went to put my car in 'drive' and the gear stick was moving freely but not shifting the gears for my car to move. A team member from the restaurant came out to give me a hand to find that my shifter cable was disconnected. He then told me to use the emergency brake to park my car so it would park and not continue in motion when I wanted to park. We then took it to mieneke where the car previously was for a transmission replacement. They said that my shifter cable had gone bad. Now my gear stick gets stuck with trying to shift gears.

When driving on a highway the vehicle suddenly slowed down and the throttle did not work. I pulled off, shut the engine and restarted the car. It then ran ok. The same thing happened 2 other times - as if the gas pedal did not work. I saw on internet that Escapes has a history of throttle problems, including my year. I took it to the Ford dealer in columbia mo and they said, based on the VIN #, that my car was supposedly not affected by this throttle issue. They said they could do nothing but charge me to replace the electronic throttle control. This is wrong. I could get seriously injured if this happens again but Ford takes no responsibilty for a known problem.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. While the vehicle was parked with the engine running, it inadvertently rolled away. The contact grabbed the door handle, but was dragged by the vehicle down the street until it stopped at an incline. The contact sustained multiple bruises on her stomach and injuries to the wrist, humerus, and great toe, which required medical attention. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (county Ford, 105 auto park drive, graham, nc 27253, 336-226-6301), but they were unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and opened case numbers: [xxx] and [xxx]. no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Escape

  • 37,000 miles
Ours is a 2013 Ford Escape with only 37,000 miles on the odometer. It's hardly been driven for a six year old car and has been well maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendation.upon starting the car in the drive mode, there was a pronounced "clunk" sound from below the cabin section of the car. The car would begin moving forward and then shift into neutral. This situation continued for about 1/10 of a mile. While turning around to return home, the same thing happened in the reverse mode. The car had to be towed to the dealer as it appeared to be unsafe to drive on a highway. The diagnosis was clutch and transmission failure. Cost to repair $4,300. Seems to me that there has to be a basic defect in the product having read so many of the other complaints on this site. Additionally and in retrospect, the engine would begin racing to a high RPM in the park mode without a foot on the accelerator. This was a disturbing phenomenon.
