Escape SE 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

I'm having the same problem as many others that I've seen on this site. Drive the Escape - get to destination - engine is off at least twenty minutes - go to leave - starts right up -- drive about 20 yards and the vehicle stalls. It starts right back up and runs like nothing is wrong. Have not taken it to a shop to have diagnosed yet. This has happened about six times over the last year.

Escape SEL

  • Automatic transmission
  • 115,000 miles

The Escape stalls at least once a week, sometimes twice, but you never know when it is going to stall. I have stalled in the middle of an intersection, going on the ramp to the freeway, sitting at a stop sign, and even in my own driveway at idle. I have taken it to two different dealerships and neither one can figure it out or knows what to do. You can't recreate the issue and no warning lights come on. I have paid to have the engine tuned up, two diagnostics, fuel filter changed, oil changed, engine flushed, etc. $$ and now they want me to pay to have the low-pressure sensor replaced at $300. I know I am not the only one - an engineer at Ford needs to pay attention and figure this out before it causes damage or takes a life. How can this get fixed?

Step up Ford and take care of this.

I can drive to and from work with no problem at all. On my day off, however, as I am running errands and driving though a parking lot the car will suddenly shut off. I put it in park and restart the car. This usually takes a couple tries before I can get home. I've taken it to the shop twice now and they cannot figure out the solution.

Escape SEL 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 83,000 miles

I first had this issue about 4 months ago. I was driving down a VERY busy highway in my area, Interstate 4 during rush hour. All of a sudden, the car putters and the gas peddle no longer works and the car came to a complete stop and the engine completely died. I was able to get the car into park and turn the key to the off position. I tried to restart the car to no avail. I got it towed by my insurance to a family mechanic who fixed one part. (All parts he fixed I'll list below, I don't remember at this point the order) This first time it ran well for about a month.

A month later, I had the same issue. I had driven about 17 miles parked for about 15-20 min and upon leaving I get just down the street and the same issue happened again. I was slightly low on gas, maybe slightly less than a 1/4 tank, so I thought maybe that sensor was bad and I needed gas. I was able to get it to a gas station. It started right up after refueling, however I get about 5 miles down the road and it died again at a stop light. I was able to restart it a couple times and would rev the engine to keep it going. It would die and I'd be able to restart it but only for short distances. I was able to get almost all the way home until the battery wouldn't start it any more and my husband came and towed me home. This time I didn't want to call my insurance so I paid for a tow back to my mechanic.

Coming home from the mechanic, I headed to drop off my mother's vehicle that I had been loaning. My mechanic and my mother's house are about 15 miles from each other. We dropped off her vehicle and as we were pulling out we didn't get a mile down the road and the same issues happened. We parked it in a near by parking lot over night to let it cool down and the next day was able to barely get it home because of the same issues.

Over these 3 trips, my mechanic replaced the Low Pressure Fuel Pump, the High Pressure Fuel Pump and the High Pressure Fuel Sensor.

This being the 4 time the issue has occurred and my mechanic was at a loss, we started to reach out to Ford to see if they could help. After about 2 weeks with no help from Ford we got it towed to the dealership. One thing I was able to find out is my vehicle was still covered under the power train warranty and a tow was covered. The Dealership on this trip replaced the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor.

On my trip home from the dealership the same issue occurred. Drop my mother's car off and upon leaving, the puttering and engine turning off happened again. I was able to keep it revved up and luckily got it home. The dealership just had another tow company out, so they are going to look at the vehicle tomorrow.

At this point I am now out close to $1,000, countless hours of reading, calling and pushing my vehicle on the side of road plus endless amounts of frustration and tears. I've reported it to the NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. I have also called Ford Customer Relations at 800.241.3673.

I'll keep this updated as things develop. Hope this wasn't too long but reading everyone else's issues really helped me feel like I'm not the only person and I really hope we are able to get Ford to fix this VERY dangerous issue.

Escape SE 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 67,100 miles

2.0L Engine sputters and shutters when idling. This has occurred both in warm and cold weather. At first, the problem would occur shortly after fueling. Now it seems like the problem happens at any time (days or weeks may pass before the problem reoccurs). (The RPM needle usually decreases slightly as the sputter/shudder occurs.) Today while sitting at a red light, the engine sputtered about three times (3 strong vibrations) before the light changed. Very annoying issue. Every time I think I may buy another Ford in the future, my Escape acts up again.

Note: vehicle is lightly driven and serviced at the recommended 5,000 mile mark at the Ford dealer that we purchased the car from when it was brand new.

Escape SE 2.0L Turbo

  • Automatic transmission
  • 14,000 miles

When we start the car, the engine light comes on and the message says "engine failure". When we put it into gear and begin to accelerate, the engine revs but doesn't drive the wheels, then catches and we lurch forward, then it revs again and we decelerate. This continues until we shut off the car and then start again. About half the time, it's fine, but the rest of the time, it repeats.

This is the second time that we've experienced this issue. The first time was soon after purchasing the car back in 2013. Ford couldn't diagnose, but when they installed/reinstalled the computer operating system, the problem went away for almost two years. About two months ago, it began happening again. We've taken it to a Ford dealer twice since then and they have been unable to diagnose the problem, which is incredibly frustrating. If anyone has any leads, we'd be very appreciative. I'm ready to taken legal action if Ford can't get it's act together.

2013 Ford Escape has a nice design, but it does not compensate for all the recalls 5 in three years, coolant leaking twice. Engine now stalling, then all of sudden it has big gerk forward. When you hit the accelerator the engine does not engage so you have to push on it very gently so it will not buck forward. I am going to get rid of this SUV asap. Now I know why Ford stands for Fix or Repair Daily or Found on the Road Dead. Better the SUV dead then me!

Escape SE 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 39,000 miles

I've had 2 problems with this car radiator shortly after 36000 mils warranty and I had to sit on the side of the road for 1 in half hours. I had to pay for towing of $150 to a Ford dealership. My insurance would have covered it if it's a road hazardous, so he went out to look at it while they take it apart and they and said the radiator has a shield cover and can't see how anything can crack it. He stated that it looked more like bad or defected radiator and the people at Ford said something must of hit real hard and caused it to crack.

Well, I had to pay $1300 out of my pocket. This was in June 2015. In September my car will stall and cut off and I thought it was me doing something wrong, until it start happening more often. I have pulled off from stopping at light and the car stalled & cut off under a 4way light, I've stalled & cut off in traffic turning left crossing over 2-3 lanes several times and stalled and cut off many times when I went into a store and came back to leave the parking lot. Cars be blowing and I am embarrassed.

The worse thing about this mechanical issue, I took it to my regular mechanic in December 2015 and he diagnosed as a bad fuel pump with only 42000 miles on the car. So, I had it fixed and of course it was no longer under warranty so I'm out of another $642.92. Well 2 weeks later the car did the same thing so that wasn't the problem.

Basically, I have spent close to $2000 for my almost new vehicle and my daughter has spent under $1000 for 2005 Buick Lacrosse I gave her 3 years ago. I am paying over $300 a month for a junk vehicle. I should have kept my paid for Buick. Pissed Off!!!

Escape LX 1.6L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,096 miles

Very dangerous situation since it happened on the highway. Completely loss acceleration of the car and could not pull over to the curb. Almost go hit by another car. Managed to pull over to the curb, shut the car off and restarted. After resuming trip, maybe half a mile down the road the issue reappeared and managed to pull off again since I was driving on the far right lane. Engine light is now on.

Took the car to my mechanic where he scanned the issue and reported and reported P2111 and P2112 present in the on board computer. Consistent with the Ford's Electronic Throttle Body (ETB). I will be calling the dealer to get the ETB replaced.

Escape SEL 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 12,023 miles

I’ve been driving for 40 minutes from work on my way home local streets. I stopped to run an errand, so my car was parked for ten to fifteen minutes. When I returned to my car, turn on the car ignition I waited for 30 seconds and proceed to drive the car out of the parking spot, the car buckled and stall. Since this keeps happening I know now to warm the car a little longer. The car keeps stalling if I don’t let it warm up for at least 5 minutes in between stops. This is so annoying. The car coolant temperature gauge shows that the car is still warm at over the 1/4 mark but the car responds as if it’s cold.. I’m not sure what the issue is but the stalling and buckling on this car is insane. I’ve been in the middle of the streets gas petal to the ground trying to give gas to the car and nothing the car would not respond... so many times this has happened while out with friends that my friends are like they sold you a lemon and all I can do is wait in the middle of the street for the car to respond so I can drive off. I’ve had this happen problem even when I warmed the car for a good 5 minutes in-between stops..

The crazy thing is that the car does not code, it coded once the engine light came on and then turned off. This car is so unpredictable.

I’ve taken the car to the Ford service department that its just ridiculous at this point.. if its not a recall issue its my car acting up again..

Came to stop and the transmission or torque converter started lurching as if the vehicle was going in and out of gear. The engine began to shake and run rough and then stalled out. I restarted and was able to get where I was going by stopping with the vehicle in neutral. This car is a lemon.

Escape

  • Automatic transmission
  • 9,900 miles

First time I noticed the problem, I was stopped at a stop sign where I felt a lurch and thought I had been struck by another car from behind, and then there was a second lurch and the engine stalled. I got it started again then had the same trouble every time I stopped for the next few miles. I parked it on a flat part of a lot because it would stall-out every time I put it in gear and tried to go forward up a hill in low rpm. I let it sit for a while and then decided to drive it back to my office but had continuing trouble and ended up avoiding the stalls by placing the transmission selector into neutral every time it came to a stop and made it home that day.

I took it to local Ford dealer the following day and left it with them for a week. They said they ran diagnostic tests, road tests and even did a wiggle test but could not find a problem. There were no codes present. They returned the vehicle to me a week later and the problem was still there but not as frequent. The defect is unnerving because you never know when it will occur. And, if it happens when moving into oncoming traffic, it could stall out and cause a fatal accident. I'm not happy at all and am considering getting rid of the vehicle but it's a fleet vehicle that has been assigned to me and haven't been able to convince the proper authorities that the issue exists.

Anyone had a similar problem and what was the cause?
