Escape

  • 30,000 miles
Since purchasing this Ford Escape sel 1.6L, I've had repeated issues with coolant loss. Every time I've flagged it to the dealer, they brush me off and have filled up the coolant, saying they can't source the issue. I've been concerned that I've had a cracked cylinder head ever since the 13S12 recall in 2014. In recent years, the coolant loss issue had accelerated dramatically. It is unpredictable. And when it happens, the coolant will suddenly go from an ok level to substantially below minimum. Furthermore, the engine has a persistent burning smell over the past couple of years. I've had to drive around with a jug of coolant and a plastic solo cup to refill the coolant tank whenever the low coolant light lights up. Over the past 2 years, I've had to refill the coolant at least a dozen times. Overall, I am concerned this was a fundamental flaw from the very beginning, and instead of doing the proper thing and rebuilding/replacing engines back in 2014 when the 13S12 recall occurred, Ford put a band-aid over it and now the issues are re-arising just when so all the vehicles have had their warranties lapse. I do hope the NHTSA forces Ford to do the right thing here.

Takata recall my vehicle had endless issues and problems. I would drive a mile or so to gas station, turn off car, get gas and then the car wouldn't start or drive 15 miles, do a job, 30 minutes later get in and the car wouldn't start. It took several times for the vehicle to turn over and then stay running. I would throw it into gear to get the engine running and sometimes it'd be fine, other times it would bog down and stall. I got into an accident and my car was totaled. I had mechanics look at the issue and they would say the O2 sensor, wastegate solenoid or evap leak. They would nickel and dime me with all these little things. The codes were, P0234, P26B7 and P0456. They said coolant was getting into the fuel system and that was contributing to the stalling and problems. I had to see a chiropractor after my accident due to spinal pain and discomfort. However, it was worth this getting rid of this lemon once and for all. If anyone else is experiencing these problems, post the fix so that it can save someone else from financial, emotional and physical pain. I didn't let anyone drive my vehicle(wife/family) because I never knew when it would stall and where.

While driving the vehicle gave a low coolant message then said vehicle overheating and I had to pull over immediately. It did not give me much of a chance to pull over safely because of the loss of power. Luckily I was just pulling out from a parking lot and drove into the next lot. The car had been parked at least 30 minutes and could not have gotten to full temp by the time the message came up. The car began to shake and shudder until I turned off the engine. I could then restart the car and it would idle and rev up fine in park but as soon as I tried to drive it would stumble again and give the overheating message. This is the 1.6L ecoboost engine. It has done this a couple times intermittently. I topped off the coolant and was able to drive the vehicle home. I've read lots of similar complaints on this vehicle and feel this should be a recall for Ford to take care of. It has been in for multiple warranty repairs including recall 13S12-S2 which was for these overheating issues. Ford knows there is a problem but for some reason did not include the 2013 model year in the other recalls. How many vehicles need to overheat and catch fire before Ford is held accountable?

I reported previously and now have the full report from the dealership. While driving at the ymca in Liberty township the car stalled out and would not restart. The computer stated engine overheating find a safe place to pull over. Upon doing so I had the vehicle towed the next morning. I was informed that the car is throwing codes that state coolant valve left open, along with 4 other codes that were tripped. The Ford customer service told me multiple times this was unrelated to the previous coolant sensor recall however the 54 pages of information as well as the dealership are stating otherwise.

The car hesitates sometimes when pressing the gas, mostly from the stopped position. For instance I've been driving and stop at a stop sign, check for oncoming traffic on the cross street(which does not have a stop sign/signal), when it is safe to proceed I press the gas to cross the intersection and the car slowly rolls out into the intersection and then finally after rolling for a few seconds will pick up and go. This happens while I'm pressing down on the gas pedal all the way. It's very dangerous while trying to cross a street with oncoming traffic. I've tried lifting my foot and pressing back down when the car doesn't move like it's supposed to and it doesn't work. It's only started doing this in the last year or so maybe and it doesn't happen every time, but very scary when it does happen, especially when I have my kids in the car. I've also had it happen when I've been on the freeway and have had to slow down from taking an exit onto another freeway and when trying to get back up to speed and it like it takes it a minute for the car to realize it's supposed to be accelerating.
