I purchased my 2013 Ford Escape July 2015 and for the last year I had it I was fairly pleased. I had heard the horror stories about these cars catching fire and I was aware of the recalls, but hey no one ever thinks something like this can happen to them right?! I had been to a Ford dealership in San Juan, CA in June for a routine tune-up, and made sure that all recalls had been done on the vehicle. The man working in the service department pulled up the VIN and told me that all recalls had been done to the vehicle and all I needed to worry about was routine maintenence that was coming up at 100,000.
On Friday September 23rd was on my way to work, on the I-5 Northbound fast lane, when the car had a warning light saying something about the 4wheel drive. The car began to lurch and smoke began to come up from underneath the windshield wipers. By the time I was able to make it over to the shoulder, thankfully with out getting in an accident, all warning signals were lit up on the dash and orange flames now replaced where the smoke once was. I grabbed what I could, including my dog, and barely "escaped" with our lives. By the time the fire department was able to get to us the car was completely engulfed in flames.
As the process with insurance and GAP was started I begun to try and get the attention of Ford as well. I am still awaiting a letter from their legal department, but until then I have been doing some investigating of my own. I have called several different Ford dealerships pretending I just purchased the car, giving them the VIN and asking what recalls have been done. Funny thing is I got a different answer from almost every dealership I called. One even gave me the name of a shop that recall work had been done and when I called the shop had never even seen the vehicle! Some said the recalls had been done and others didn't.
I see these cars everyday, some with child seats in the back, and it makes me cringe. I have read that I am now the fourteenth person this has happened to. How many times does this need to happen before Ford gets it together. I have been severely traumatized by this. I don't wish this feeling on a fifteenth person.

On 10-25-15 I was driving a few miles away from home, when the dashboard system states "High engine temperature, pull over safely." Within 30 seconds of pulling off the road, the flames came out near the windshield from under the hood. Within 5 minutes my car was fully engulfed and destroyed.
I contacted my dealership who notified there was a recall on the engine that oil could leak onto the engine and start a fire. I never received a recall notice. I was given the number for Ford Customer Relationship Center. I told them what happened and they turned my case over to lheir legal counsel and I was told I would receive a letter with their response in 15 business days. I have still not received a letter and Ford tells me all I can do is wait for the letter to come. My car was completely totaled and the insurance valued my vehicle enough to pay it off. I am so upset and frustrated that Ford is not taking this matter more seriously. Fortunately my five year old son was not in the vehicle with me and I was uninjured.

We had to be without our new car for close to a month for a recall that said there were engine fires. They fixed it and ... we got an engine fire. Go figure.

My precious 9 month old baby, my wonderful mother and I were in the car when it had caught fire. Within 30 seconds of the check engine light coming on the car was up in smoke! I found a safe place to pull and park….. 30 seconds. My mom and I both acted quickly. My mom was able to get my sweet baby out of the burning car and I ran to get a fire extinguisher. I had to walk away when my Mom and Baby were still not safe! Thankfully there just happened to be two police officers on site that had a fire extinguisher. They were able to extinguish the flame before two other cars went up with it! About 5 minutes later the fire department had arrived! If I would have had to wait for them it would have been absolutely terrible for many more people. I believe all three cars would have been gone! The two that I parked beside and my Ford! There is absolutely no reason this car should be allowed to be on the road. The emotional stress and financial burden this has placed on me and my family is uncalled for. Within 90 seconds from my first warning…. The whole engine under the hood was engulfed in flames! It was so hot so quickly that if melted everything in sight! We had full coverage. Our car was “replaced” by the insurance company of the present cost of the car, but in no way covered all of our expenses from this tragedy! Ford refused to do anything for us. Our pain and suffering from this experience is overwhelming! Please do not put your family in this same danger.
