  • 96,000 miles
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that there was an intermittent loss of power steering ability that caused the steering wheel to become difficult to turn in either direction. The dealer (ted britt Ford, 11165 fairfax blvd, fairfax, va 22030, (703) 591-8484 or 1-(866) 224-7068) indicated that the vehicle was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 14V284000 (steering) for the 2008-2011 models and would need to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy other than having the dealer repair the vehicle. The manufacturer issued one tsb for the steering concerning this year, make, and model vehicle. The VIN and failure mileage were not available.

Vehicle loses power steering without notice; vehicle was stationary, I started it and received an error message that power steering failed. This happened twice. I read several related reports on this website and online and also saw there was a recall for this issue in previous year models. Dealership did not warn me.

When I turned on the car to get back home from the grocery store the screen showed "steering wheel at fault." The steering wheel was very hard to turn and I had to get home so I managed to get the car to the house. The next morning, the same thing happened again and because of this problem I could not take my car to a trip where I had already planned, now I can't drive it to work either, it has been two days and the same problem remains.

Escape

  • 80,200 miles
While driving my 2013 Ford Escape (1.6L engine) on an interstate, I was traveling at 80mph on cruise control. Suddenly the cruise control was deactivated and I felt a jolt. I then observed a message on the dash which read engine overheating, stop safely. I then observed the engine light to illuminate, the coolant needle go to the red hot level, and I began to loose acceleration. The vehicle was not overheating and was later confirmed at a nearby car repair. Once stopped and attempt to restart, loss of steering had begun. Mileage during incident was 80,200. After taking it to Ford regarding newer recall msgs, they advised the steering rack was not communicating with their diagnostic and must be the reason for the repair. Repair has not been completed after reading incidents and complaints regarding similar issues/concerns. I believe this to be another recall issue.

Escape 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 92,971 miles
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. While driving various speeds, the steering wheel became difficult to steer and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. The vehicle was restarted and drove normally. However, the failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to cabrera auto (carr #2 km 82.2 salida expreso hatillo, pr 00614, (787) 333-8410) for diagnostic testing, but no failure codes were located. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The approximate failure mileage was 92,971. Consumer stated the vehicle had multiple failures of electrical steering. Finally, the owner had to replace the steering rack and pknon because it stopped working completely. Updated 9/4/18

Escape

I was driving to work last Friday and I suddenly heard the alert signal and dashboard light and then I couldn't turn the steering wheel. The error message on the dash said "steering assist fault service required". I was able to turn the wheel enough to get it off the road. Luckily I was only going about 35 mph on the highway. The power steering had failed as I was driving down the highway. There were many other cars around me, but luckily they avoided me. I have one repair quote for $2000 to repair the entire power steering rack and pinion system, of which we cannot pay. We took it to 2 other mechanics who reported that they were unable to fix it because it was an electric system and had to be reprogrammed by the dealership service dept. From my research, this is the same issue Ford had with their 2008-2011 Ford Explorer.

While arriving home (almost entering my garage), suddenly I have this message on screen 'steering assist fault service required' and it is almost impossible to steer the vehicle. Searching on the internet I've found a lot of people complaining about the same problem and how is possible that there is no recall for that.

I started up the car and started backing out of a parking space. Could not turn the steering wheel and an error message popped up on the dashboard "steering assist fault service required. On a 2013 Ford Escape with 90K on it. I was able to to get it towed to a garage and they are replacing my steering column for $1800. My 1967 mustang with no power steering was easier to turn than this car. Luckily we were in a safe spot.

Escape

  • 59,000 miles
I drove the vehicle to a movie theater. Parked the car and when I returned to the car. A warning light stated that there was a steering problem. I put the car in motion and it was nearly impossible to steer. I was able to get the vehicle to my home, approx. 3 miles, called aaa and had it towed to the Ford garage. My extended warranty covered most of the repair costs. My main concern is that if my wife or I had been traveling the roads at a normal speed, neither of us, who are in our 80's could have brought the car to a safe stop. There was no pre-warning of a problem with the steering and the Ford manual dosen't mention any potential problems.

While driving the vehicle at low speed (thank god) I attempted to turn and the steering hung up. I could feel the floor board under my feet move as I tried to turn the wheel. I forced it to turn and then stopping, I looked under the car only to find a large piece or the whole piece of the heat shield had come loose and was laying on top of the exhaust system and the steering. I pulled it loose, some was torn up, and pushed the rest out of the way of the steering. Drove home. Was informed it was not under warranty. Car has 63,000 miles on it. Never driven hard.

Escape

  • 75,000 miles
I drove my 2013 Escape SE the evening of 11-27-2017 and needed to avoid a collision by braking and doing a very quick, sharp turn to the right. No problem with function after that, finished my errand and returned home, parked car in garage as usual. Next afternoon when I started the car there was no power steering, possibly no manual steering at all. Wheel would not move in any gear, in any direction, any more than when car is turned off. Only advice from local dealer is to have it towed in and they will look at it. This will not be possible with no money available for months. This is a widely commented problem on this vehicle. A very similar, if not exact, recall was done on 2011 and older years of this same vehicle. Since this is a high safety issue, why hasn't a recall been done on the 2013" my fail happened overnight, in the garage, car parked and turned off, but many say it has happened while car is in motion. Please tell me what I can do to help this safety issue become a recall? I am willing to help, but don't know how. What can I do to help" my grandkids could have been in the car during a while-in-motion fail, so glad it was parked.

  • 82,500 miles
Our 2013 Ford Escape at 82,500 miles has to have the power steering control module replaced at a cost of $1,900. Several times when turning on the car and backing up, the warning light "steering assist fault-service required" came on. Turn car off and back on then light goes off however a major safety issue to us and other drivers if loss of power steering goes out while driving. Requesting recall on the 2013 models be recalled similar to earlier Escape model recalls with same safety issues (NHTSA campaign #-14V284000 & Ford recall # 14S05)

Car continued to shut off while driving locking up steering, brakes, etc. Car was brought to tunkhannock Ford on 10/24 and remained there until 5 P.M. on 10/27. Told was doing it for them. I'm informed by a tunkhannock Ford employee, the car was only taken out off lot & test 1 time. On 10/28, my wife, 4 & 8 yr. Old are driving & the car stopped 7 times total on route 6 in tunkhannock where a truck driver got out and assisted my wife as she was stuck in the middle of the highway with flashers on. After arguing with the service writer, sales manager for compromising the safety of my wife and daughters - I was still denied a loaner vehicle where we paid enterprise for a rental in order to get to work. I requested a loaner from their other tunkhannock dealership and was still denied and all I was told by matt kerr, sales manager is "I understand your concern, I have young children also but it's out of my hands." Effective today 11/3/17, they still have our spare key & have yet to call to check on the status of the appointment that I did not go to scheduled for 10/30/17. I called montrose motors owned by the same previous owner of gateway Ford where this car was purchased and they got it in immediately - provided a loaner vehicle hassle free and said many loyal customers have left tunkhannock Ford for their crudeness with service by writing up work orders for loyal customers bringing their vehicles in for air - we don't care how long they needed to assess the car - our formal complaint which we are pursuing is tunhannock Ford has jeporadized the safety and well-being of my family - especially my 2 daughters by denying me a loaner vehicle
