While I was driving approximately 45 mph on hwy 62 near vilas rd. In jackson county, Oregon, the low battery warning illuminated and the steering locked up. Luckily it was on a straight road and not near my home in the mountains which is about 25 miles of curvy roads. I had just purchased and drove the car home from the dealership the night before. I went to the Ford dealership, not where I purchased the vehicle, and was informed this car is not subject to recall even though the same models and year range have this exact safety hazard & fault. My vehicle is now at the mechanic, that the dealership chose, and they say it is a $2,000 repair with an undertermined time frame to repair it. I could have been killed, killed my wife, or another person with the steering locking up like that.

On my 2013 Ford Escape, I experienced the wheel locking up and not being able to turn as I got a message stating 'power steering fault, service required'. I took my vehicle to a dealership nearby my work and it was connected to a computer and pulled code U3000 and found to be a faulty steering gear with estimated repair cost of $1,940. When planning to repair, I was told the part was on backorder and did not have a date when it was supposed to be stocked. The code was cleared and I was sent on my way. Again my wheel has continued to lock up and I have now been without a vehicle for 3 days. I have googled this issue and it seems to be a very common issue across the United States

Power steering assist fault error would come on when turning onto a street which would eliminate all power steering to the vehicle. This would happen at anytime when driving. I had the vehicle (2013 Ford Escape) serviced on 7-18-18 at the dealership. The service center informed me that the error was caused by a faulty electronic assist rack and pinion and needed to be replaced. My vehicle has only 41000 miles. I feel this is a safety issue and should be noted for a recall.

The dealer (ted britt Ford, 11165 fairfax blvd, fairfax, va 22030, (703) 591-8484 or 1-(866) 224-7068) indicated that the vehicle was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 14V284000 (steering) for the 2008-2011 models and would need to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy other than having the dealer repair the vehicle. The manufacturer issued one tsb for the steering concerning this year, make, and model vehicle. The VIN and failure mileage were not available.

I read several related reports on this website and online and also saw there was a recall for this issue in previous year models. Dealership did not warn me.

While driving my 2013 Ford Escape (1.6L engine) on an interstate, I was traveling at 80mph on cruise control. Suddenly the cruise control was deactivated and I felt a jolt. I then observed a message on the dash which read engine overheating, stop safely. I then observed the engine light to illuminate, the coolant needle go to the red hot level, and I began to loose acceleration. The vehicle was not overheating and was later confirmed at a nearby car repair. Once stopped and attempt to restart, loss of steering had begun. Mileage during incident was 80,200. After taking it to Ford regarding newer recall msgs, they advised the steering rack was not communicating with their diagnostic and must be the reason for the repair. Repair has not been completed after reading incidents and complaints regarding similar issues/concerns. I believe this to be another recall issue.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The approximate failure mileage was 92,971. Consumer stated the vehicle had multiple failures of electrical steering. Finally, the owner had to replace the steering rack and pknon because it stopped working completely. Updated 9/4/18

I was driving to work last Friday and I suddenly heard the alert signal and dashboard light and then I couldn't turn the steering wheel. The error message on the dash said "steering assist fault service required". I was able to turn the wheel enough to get it off the road. Luckily I was only going about 35 mph on the highway. The power steering had failed as I was driving down the highway. There were many other cars around me, but luckily they avoided me. I have one repair quote for $2000 to repair the entire power steering rack and pinion system, of which we cannot pay. We took it to 2 other mechanics who reported that they were unable to fix it because it was an electric system and had to be reprogrammed by the dealership service dept. From my research, this is the same issue Ford had with their 2008-2011 Ford Explorer.

I started up the car and started backing out of a parking space. Could not turn the steering wheel and an error message popped up on the dashboard "steering assist fault service required. On a 2013 Ford Escape with 90K on it. I was able to to get it towed to a garage and they are replacing my steering column for $1800. My 1967 mustang with no power steering was easier to turn than this car. Luckily we were in a safe spot.

I drove the vehicle to a movie theater. Parked the car and when I returned to the car. A warning light stated that there was a steering problem. I put the car in motion and it was nearly impossible to steer. I was able to get the vehicle to my home, approx. 3 miles, called aaa and had it towed to the Ford garage. My extended warranty covered most of the repair costs. My main concern is that if my wife or I had been traveling the roads at a normal speed, neither of us, who are in our 80's could have brought the car to a safe stop. There was no pre-warning of a problem with the steering and the Ford manual dosen't mention any potential problems.
