When driving, not related to speed or curves, you'll be driving along and feel the steering tightening and are then down to manual steering. You have to pull off and turn the car off. When you turn it back on it has reset and the power steering resumes. We have plugged in to an error code reader and it is not returning a code. An online search has shown an internal service memo (csp # 14N02 put out 8/26/2014) regarding the issue. This has happened several times, most recently twice last week.

I tried to pull out of a parking space at work and the steering wheel would not move. I understand Ford has had to recall over 1.1 million SUV's for power steering defects. This repair will cost me $1,800 to repair. I am told my VIN # is not included in the recall but with all the problems the other 1.1 million SUV's have had I feel like mine should be included in the recall. The 2013 Escape won't pull out of a turn without additional force applied or will try and make a turn on its own. Once you forcibly make it straighten out, it works fine. This has happened seven times in the last six weeks. Fortunately we haven't been going faster than 30 miles an hour. If it happens at a freeway speed, no telling what would happen. I happened to my wife lasst week and she said if a car was coming from the other direction, it would have been very close to an accident. Needless to say, this car is making us very nervous. We took it into the dealer we bought it from, marysville Ford in Washington and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. A test drive doesn't work, since it happens so seldom. What do we do" if I trade it in and tell what is the problem, I won't get anything for the car. If I don't say something, someone may get killed! the car has 37000 miles. At 20000 miles it overheated for no apearant reason and Ford couldn't find that problem either. They finally changed out the engine since on one could figure it out. We want to get rid of this lemon and want Ford to buy it from us at fair market value. A mechanic friend of ours said it might be the "variable resister" in the steering. If this is so, why couldn't the Ford dealer figure that out. I've read forums where this has happened to others. Why isn't this a recall item" a lot of people know about this, including the dealer, so if we get into an accident, there will be repercussions.

Was food shopping and when finished I got in my car and started it up. Got a message there was a problem with the steering assist. I could not turn my wheel so I shut off my car. Waited for someone to pick me up. I started my car to put the A/C on as I was waiting to keep the food I just bought from getting warm. The steering then was fine but every time I get in my car I worry that it will happen when I am driving. Called Ford 800-392-3673 and I was told there is a csp# 14N02 customer satisfaction PCM and I should tell Ford to fix this issue dated 8/26/2014. It is covered under 10 yr/150K mi. I have contacted my local Ford and they tell me there is no recall. I am not letting up on this. There are over 100 complaints on this website just like mine and Ford needs to address it.

The vehicle was taken to joe myers Ford (16634 northwest fwy, houston, tx 77040 (713) 766-3600) where it was diagnosed that the electric power steering motor had to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls. The vehicle was repaired. The contact believed that the failure occurred because of the close proximity to the engine with heat causing the power steering motor to fail. The failure mileage was 59,465.

Electric stering assist is going out and according to my mechanic may ultimately result in the stering being locked with the car in motion. Checking the internet shows many owners with the same problem. Repairs run up to $2000 dollars. It appears to me that any mechanical defect that could result is loss of control while moving would be a safety matter that should be addressed with a recall.

Car was stationary, we started it up after a day of normal driving. The wheel was almost impossible to turn. A warning light came on dashboard that said something like "steering system fault - service required." Turned car off and on two times resulting in same warning light and could not turn wheel. Turned off and on for third time and light was gone, steering was easy again. We decided not to drive the car to a shop because the inability to turn the wheel was terrifying and dangerous. We had it towed to a service shop and have to replace the power steering rack.
