Escape LS 1.6V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 18,956 miles

Check engine light came on for a second time in as many weeks. Codes were PO303 and PO316. The solution was to pull spark plug in cylinder #3 - coolant evident, spark plug replaced. Within 500 miles, the check engine light came on again. Further diagnosis indicates need to replace the motor. A slight gap in the manufacture of the cylinders allows minutes amounts of coolant to seep into cylinder. They're looking for a short block, but they are hard to come by. It may take up to a month to fix. I have a loaner so far - I will refuse to pay for a rental. This dealership has seen several 2018 Escapes come in for this issue.

Escape SE 1.5L L4

3rd engine installed on this car with 42K miles. Engine light came on while driving on major interstate highway at 55mph, and stalled and drifted to road side. Would not start. Towed to Garnet Ford and was told the timing belt tensioner failed and it destroyed the engine block and cylinder head valves. Complete engine replacement required, this engine that failed was replaced at 30K so this engine only lasted about 12K miles. The first engine on this car blew up at 30k. This is the 1.5L Ecoboost 4 cylinder. I would not recommend this car to my worst enemy.

We purchashed this 2018 Ford Escape in July 2019 with 24000 kms. We paid 14000 down, with the trade of the old 2014 Escape, and only owe 9000. In May 2020 the check engine light came on. We contacted Ford who told us not to worry about it unless the check engine light came on blinking. We trusted Ford. We continued to drive.

One day in June I was driving with my 4 year old grandson in the SUV and the check engine light started blinking indicating to immediately stop driving the car. I was stranded on the side of the road with my grandson. I was 1 km from my house. A guy stopped to help. He put coolant in it enough to get me home. I called Ford. This was on a Friday. They told us to have the car towed and to come get a rental as our insurance covered it If there was one available. There was.

We live 34 kms from Ford. It was pouring rain that day. My grandson was put down for a nap. When the tow truck came, because of COVID they could not give me a ride into Ford as Ford closes as 5pm and I had to get there before then. So the rental company could not deliver, and we had to wake up my grandson and drive in the rain to Ford to get my rental car. When I arrived at Ford there was no "Hi, Mrs. Roberts", just "there she is" (to the rental agent). Not very good service. When I told the service agent on the phone that I had no way in to retrieve the rental due to my grandson napping, he said "well, you better wake him up!"! The rental agent took me out in the pouring rain, made me stand in the rain (no umbrella) to show me the car!!! It was a Hyundai Kona. It was Friday, so I took the car.

Monday, I called Ford for an update. They said the parts would be in tomorrow. Three weeks later, our car was ready as there were issues with sending the wrong or faulty parts (two different times).

I have several medical issues and had to travel to Halifax five times this summer. We went in the Kona but my left hip (for which I had five surgeries on) started to really hurt. That is why we bought an SUV, as it is much easier to get in and out of and go on long drives. I went to the rental company and they swapped it out for a Hyundai Tuscon. As I said, three weeks later we got our vehicle back.

We went to the Service Manager and complained. End result was we were given the maintenance package for three years. This, in my mind, was not sufficient. We did not feel like we were really cared for. We didn't need this as I was really sick and was waiting for another surgery in Halifax so this was indeed a very stressful time for us and this could have been solved early if we were told to bring the vehicle in to get checked when we initially called. My husband has severe PTSD from 28 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and this set him back quite a bit. The purchase of two SUVs in 5 years.

When we purchased the second Escape the salesman knew of our issue and guaranteed it wouldn't happen again!

Engine light came on took it in to North Brothers and they said coolant leaked into engine blowing a cylinder. Need to replace engine. There were 40 cars ahead of mine to replace the engine at this dealership alone. They said it could be 6 months before I get my car back. I am now into my 3rd "loaner" car since June 4th because I have to turn it back in at 500 miles. I heard that 3 other people were getting out of their lease however they aren't being very helpful with getting out of mine. I went to another dealership and they were much more helpful.

engine light on

Basically the same problem as others I've heard. Check engine light on for over a month. Changed the fuel, checked the gas tank filler (there is no gas cap), etc. No change, so I took it in expecting a quick fix. After a day at the dealer they called to tell me that coolant was leaking into one of the cylinders and an engine replacement was needed to fix it. Covered under warranty. They ordered a short block but apparently they are backordered (there are 12 more Escapes with the same problem at the dealer). I was told that Ford is aware of the problem but so far there is no recall. Still waiting. I have a loaner but it's been over 3 weeks!

Update from Sep 30, 2019: Finally got my vehicle back today after 8 weeks and a day! They wound up reassembling the engine replacing the short block. Still no word on a recall.

Update from Jan 22, 2020: Finally Ford has issued an important service alert for this issue. Not quite a recall but they are notifying owners to bring vehicles in for a free fix.

4 times in last month -car loses power on interstate. It will suddenly drop to 5 mph- all lights come on. It is dangerous. Ford says computer does not read that anything happened. There are many reports of this online. They need a recall. Fortunately after a few hours the car will start to work again. Ford says they can't find a problem.

Traded in my 2011 Ford Escape because nothing but problems with it. Purchased 2018 Ford Escape brand new. Its a year old and my engine light came on then shut off. Came on again few days later and my heat stopped working and was almost stalling. Took it to dealership and they informed me they made a bad batch of engines where water pump is in the engine and it fails causing coolant to go inside cylinder heads. So now they are putting a brand new engine inside my year old car. I went from problems to major problems. How do they justify selling these vehicles worth 30,000 knowing it's a lawsuit happening? Do they put same style engine back and I have to worry its going to happen when I have no warranty?
