Escape SE 1.5L In-Line 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,400 miles

The vehicle started making a loud clicking noise at 51,400 miles. Ford dealership said they found metal pieces in the engine after removing the timing cover. They said the engine needed to be replaced and that my warranty had expired 1 month earlier based on "time" not "miles". The car had been taken to the dealership at all recommended maintenance tasks and has a Carfax Gold Medal for maintenance. I asked "Big" Ford to review the case and pay for the full cost since it was still under the miles warranty but was 1 month past the time listed in the warranty. Ford took 2 months to respond, so I was without the car for 2 months while it sat at the local dealer. Ford came back and said they'd pay for 50% of the cost. The dealer took another week to install the "new" engine, which isn't really new, they used the old parts they took off the old engine and installed them on the new engine. The total cost was $14,000 for parts and labor. I currently have 2 other older Ford's that have 175,000 miles on them and have never had any issues with the engine, only the standard type of repairs. So having to pay for a "new" engine after only 51,000 miles is ridiculous.
