Escort SE 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,562 miles

Check engine light would come on at start up or while driving. The code was the typical useless 'lean engine burn' which could be dozens of things. Consultation with my mechanic led me to check many things. What appears to be the problem was a vacuum leak in the small (3cm by 3cm) rubber right angle connector on top of the valve cover. It was cracking. I coated it with silicone and black plastic tape. The problem had been recurring weekly. No more problem for last six months. This chunk of rubber was a special order item $22. Any old piece of rubber hose of the correct diameter would also solve the problem.
