We were living in Alaska, and the rear heater/ac had this aweful burning plastic smell. The floor heat worked just fine, so I didn't bother. Now we're in FL, and the overhead A/c doesn't work either (really had no need in AK). It almost sounds like a broken belt flapping back there.
Also, I wanted to point out that in 2007 when we were in Gainesville, FL, the a/c didn't seem to be blowing as cool. My family had a lot of old cars, and I just thought you had to add some more freon or something to it. A local mechanic said it was the weirdest thing-- that when the car was running, the a/c was fine. Yet when they had the car just idling, the a/c would just power down and blow not so cold air. But as soon as you stepped on the gas, it would work again. Being we were moving to AK and wouldn't need a/c, and he wasn't really offering me a fix for it, I just let it go.
Now that we're down south again, I"m looking for some ideas. Wondering if anyone has had this problem. I read some of the other posts, but didn't see obvious solutions....

Annoying clicking sound coming from rear air. Rear A/C only blows cold air. If I try to adjust the temp for the rear air the clicking gets worse to almost a thumping sound.

This goes along with my other complaint of the hot air constantly blowing. There was a loud ticking noise that went along with it. This is the same fix....

When trying to change to the floor A/C, (it mainly did it on heat) the rear A/C switcher door would click and thump. The Actuator motor gear was partially stripped. Easy replace, pull the cover off and swap.

nylon gear driving metal gear, what kind of person with an IQ would have thought this combination would work? Happened again 18 months later after warranty expired

I have a 2003 Ford (1st ford I've owned) which I purchased in 2003!! Lately I have heard some clicking noise from the (L) rear of the vehicle. This noise is constant when the rear AC/Heater is set to ON........
Update from May 16, 2009: A/C went out today.....i have a 1996 Camry and EVERYTHING still works....

I endured a clicking sound coming from the rear ac/heat for several years. I could control it by not setting the temp gauge to extremes. However now the heat does not work at all. It only blows cold air.

When I turned on the rear ac there was a constant clicking noise very annoying...had it checked out by a Ford dealership and they told me it was a blend door actuator that was faulty...I had to have it repaired...I still had my 6 month limited warranty that covered some of it but I still had to pay $129.25...extended warranty will not cover this issue

This is an annoyance that can sometimes be eliminated by setting the rear heater/air conditioner controls to some setting. The setting that eliminates the noise changes, and has no relationship to the actual comfort of the occupants. I'd like to avoid tearing down the headliner to replace some actuator or door flap in a duct, but I don't see any alternative, any ideas?

Rear A/C and Heater actuator clicks, and doesn't change the airflow direction from floor or roof blowers.
