We have had our Expedition for about two years; purchased in 2-2010 with 98,9XX miles. We tow a boat 4-8 times per year. I had overdrive on during a few of my tows, so some of the damage found was my own fault. The shop showed me a burned and scored forward drive, overdrive locking clutches were metal on metal, and my fluid was very dark but smelled fine. The planetary gears, valve body, reverse gears were in great shape, so the repair cost less. Parts were very quick to get, and the repair took four days to finish. The shop recommended not letting the fluid get too old, and said this repair was fairly common. I got it back it shifts like a dream, no noise(very little before problem was diagnosed), and we have never been happier. I WILL NOW REPLACE FLUID AND FILTER AS RECOMMENDED, and not just assume it is fine because it was built FORD TOUGH! I WOULD BUY ANOTHER EXPEDITION! WARNING SIGNS THERE WAS NO IDIOT LIGHT Stutter in forward while driving; harder shift than normal(could hear and feel it was not quite right); slipped out of gear, but would re-engage; than finally no forward gears.

If you can afford it, do not buy Ford products. I only have 48000 miles on my 05 expedition 4x4 and I have had to replace the air suspension compressor, the A/C compressor and manifold, tie rod ends, tranny coolant line, and now the car wont move when I shift to drive. I take it to the dealership but they are not very good. I repeat. Stay away from Ford. you'll pay for it in the end.

Transmission failed, only 80,000 miles on an 8yr old vehicle. Had to drive home 15 miles through traffic in 2nd gear. Awesome. Oh, and when I called Ford to get it covered under my extended 100,000 mile warranty, I was told that the extended warranty only extended the mileage, not the 5 years of the original warranty. Found On Roadside Dead, FORD.
