2006 Ford Expedition on 2/2/11 while I was driving on freeway the vehicle goes into "engine fail safe mode." Not knowing what this meant I was going to proceed to exit up ahead which was an exit up a hill. When I stepped on the gas I realized the engine was off. I was able to move slightly to the left to stop on the shoulder at the bottom of the exit. This is very dangerous and Ford needs to make a recall before a life is lost!

Consumer states vehicle will activate the engine fail safe mode and vehicle will shut down while driving the consumer stated when the vehicle shut down, loss of power steering occurred. The consumer stated upon stopping, he discovered that turning the ignition switch to the off position and turning it back to the on position, the engine would re-start. The dealership was unable to find any problem by running a diagnostic check. The consumer stated no warning lights appeared, except when the engine fail safe mode activated. The engine safe mode warning disappeared upon starting the vehicle.

I was preparing to make a left hand turn into a busy office complex, and the engine in my 2006 Ford Expedition cut off. The system generated code was 'engine failsafe mode". I turned on my hazards, put the car in park and waited a few minutes to restart. The engine car started, but the fact that it cut off, without warning is extremely alarming. I've contacted Ford corporate who said that there were no recalls, and that I needed to go to a service center. After researching the internet and this site, I am convinced that this issue should prompt a recall, but Ford's cost-benefit analysis indicates that it is waiting until there are enough fatalities to make the determination to fix what appears to be a $600-800 issue. Ford should be and can be held liable for gross negligence in their deliberate decision to disregard the engine failure complaints. I have been a loyal Ford customer for several decades. That is no longer the case.

Complaint filed regarding a personally owned 2006 Ford Expedition XLT, owned from 2/2010 to present (12/2010)> three separate instances when driving the vehicle when the "failsafe mode" warning lights and all loss of vehicle control:steering, brakes, acceleration, etc. Occurred/ randomly during this period of ownership with no apparent reason. Vehicle restarted immediately. All instances of the condition occurred when outside temperature was below freezing (winter months) into a right or left turn. No evidence of loss of antifreeze, engine overheating, coolant leaks, etc. Mechanic assessment could not find a reason for the engine fail safe activation. This is a significant, potential safety problem for the driver/passengers of 2006 Ford Expedition experiencing the random occurring engine failure attributable to the failsafe feature of this vehicle.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. While driving at 5 mph, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle would not accelerate. The contact would lightly tap on the accelerator pedal in order to get it to engage. The check engine warning light was also illuminated. The dealer advised that one of the coil packs was defective and it ws replaced. The failure recurred. The contact stated only one coil pack was replaced by the dealer but there were two additional coil packs that needed to be replaced. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 135,000.

My wife, three kids and myself were in our 2006 Ford Expedition limited coming down a mountain pass in lake Tahoe when all of a sudden the engine stopped! a code on the dash read "fail safe engine mode". the steering wheel locked and there was no power, no acceleration. I was lucky to pull to the side of the road. The following day, I took the truck to the carson city, nv Ford dealer and paid for a diagnostic. Notes from dealer: Road test could not verify. Performed eec self test, has code P0104. Performed wiggle test and pinpoint tests. Performed recorder-monitor test all the pids looked good. Removed the maf sensor. Has debris on the maf sensor wires. Recommend a new maf sensor." I put in a new maf sensor and air filter. In driving less than 3 miles after this was done, the truck did the same thing. The "fail safe engine mode" came on, loss of power and acceleration. I had to turn the truck off completely, remove key and restart. Then the truck did not hold the idle and died. After a second time, the truck restarted. I am still driving with the check engine light off and have another appointment with the Ford dealer tomorrow morning (6-24-10) to see what is going on. We are supposed to leave tomorrow and drive 1100 miles to return to denver.

The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the fuel injectors were stuck open and flooded the engine. The dealer also stated that both catalytic converters were ruined and needed to be replaced, and the engine was possibly damaged. The contact stated that there was a recall related to the failure for previous model years and warranties were extended as a result. The contact called the manufacturer who stated that they would not extend the warranty on the vehicle. The contact filed a complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 65,000. Updated 11/19/10. Updated 10/27/10. The consumer stated a new engine was put in the vehicle. However, he continued to experience problems. The dealer stated the #6 cylinder had compressed causing the piston to stop a half inch from the top which caused the vehicle to shut down. Updated 11/24/10

On 2 separate occasions (both around 40,000 miles), the car just shut itself off, without warning, while driving down the road at about 40 mph. Power steering and power braking both failed. I was just able to coast across several busy lanes of traffic to get to the side of the road. This could be extremely dangerous, particularly if I was on a freeway or interstate. The dealer's diagnosis was that the throttle had gotten stuck wide open, and that the car had to go into failsafe mode to prevent it from accelerating out of control. What if the failsafe mode fails? I've read numerous other complaints of the same thing happening on other 2006 Ford Expedition. There is clearly a defective part here, and it is clearly a safety issue.

2006 Ford Expedition, has stopped several times while in route somewhere. Just stops at once and safe mode failure light comes on. Power steering fails, as well as engine stopping. Have had rebuilt transmission, replace the throttle, and several other things including I believe air pump. None of this cheap. But biggest concern is the safety of the vehicle. Have been very blessed that no one has been behind me when this has happened or on the highway. This is very scary and Ford needs to recall and figure out what is causing this to occur.
