Gear slips and hard time getting it to go into 2nd. Engine works but the transmission is really failing. It shouldn't be going out with the mileage it has. Dangerous.

OK so the transmission decides to start acting up as I'm trying to pay for college. I had recently purchased this vehicle, used, from some shady trailer and field used car dealership after totaling a '99 pathfinder. I'll start it up and shift into reverse, it stays neutral. I'll apply the brake and hit the gas, let off, hit the gas, let off for a relatively good while, about a minute sometimes longer, sometimes less, same with putting it in drive. I was hoping maybe shifting into 1st would help and I could work my way up from there but no dice. I currently go through about a quart and a half of transmission fluid a week just to keep it working fairly normally, but there is no notable fluid leak. Someone told me it could be an exterior module vacuuming the tranny fluid out and burning it up but I don't know how much truth that has to it. I just need to find a way to fix it fast, cant afford a new vehicle and without it I would lose my job.

Damn Explorer's transmission is pouring out fluid and will not grab gears therefore it will not move. this is the only car i have. i have no job and its a real pain in the ass

I guess I should say I'm lucky....that My transmission failed with this many miles on it compared to the rest of the posts I see in here. Phase one, always smelling something...not sure what it was, phase two one day it didn't kick into gear band 2 right away...it was less all of its fluid. phase three, topped it off, has never shifted correctly since. parked till I really know what to do with it.
