Explorer

  • Automatic transmission
  • 147,000 miles

My 95 Explorer has been fairly trouble free except for a replaced tranny about 3 years ago due to previous owner's poor maint.. However just a couple of weeks ago I noticed some dash lights out in the instrument cluster. A few days later my cig lighter broke through behind the dash. I had to remove the front part off the dash including the instrument panel and most of the switches in the dashboard. After removing the panel and instrument cluster I repaired the lighter and replaced the bulbs in the cluster and started reassembly. After I was done I noticed I had more electrical problems and had to go through the process again affecting more repairs. After reassembly again...yes, more trouble. This time the windows stopped working and the 4X4 lights were flashing as well as some of the interior lights also stopped working. I am at that point now and am still working on it however I suspect the cause of the problem could be the many electrical connectors inside the dash area. I needed to unplug and replug them as I worked on it and everytime I completed reassembly it was worse. I could be wrong since I have not confirmed it. (If anyone attempts to work on there own vehicle be advised to disconnect the battery and let sit for 2 minutes before beginning or the airbag may accidentally trigger and discharge.(Service advisory)). I am going to attempt to clean the connectors with some electrical contact spray cleaner to see if this fixes the problem. If this doesn't fix it I guess I'm in the dark like everyone else. I noticed a great deal of dust under the dashboard area and it would not surprise me that some connectors are dirty.

I will report back if this solution is successful....or not.

Update from Apr 17, 2013: After rechecking and cleaning electical plugs I was advised to recheck the fuse panel again and this time physically checked with a meter each fuse. I found a 15 amp fuse blown that looked like it was good. After replacing the fuse I now have windows again, my 4X4 works correctly again and my interior lights are again working. I suggest checking your fuses again if you haven't already, with a fuse tester. You can find them at most automotive supply stores.

Explorer Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 156,000 miles

I absolutely USED to love my 1995 Ford Explorer, Limited, 4w/d. NOW it sits in a yard, under a tree with molded leather interior, completely ruined carpeting, and a frustrated owner that finally gave up the fight. I never had it checked by a mechanic because I couldn't afford it. I stumbled across this website today to find there were other peaple with the SAME exact thing, (read a few under windows/windshields) I felt it more an electrical issue since it includes blinking lights and affects the sunroof as well, and I can't remember for sure, but maybe the p/l as well. At first, it would happen maybe once a week, and only last a few minutes, or I could sometimes fix it by turning the vehicle off and back on. Then it became almost daily, and it would be multiple times a day. Then, finally, the driver's window never got rolled back up because there was no correcting it. PLEASE.. if ANYBODY can tell me how to fix this (cheaply), I would love to get my truck back on the road!!!
