I was doing some research on my 1997 Ford Explore that I am finally about to dump and I came across that the cam shaft broke on someone else's 1997 Ford Explorer. As with the other person, it looked like a metal defect. I thought what happened to me was a fluke. Amused (in retrospect) that someone else had the same problem.

The end of the crank shaft just broke off, I was lucky I was driving slow. Repair man says it looks like a defect in the metal. Also will need new engine, he says it would cost more to fix it than to buy a new one. He is a Ford certified mechanic.

Yea, SO here I'am looking and not believing the fact that my ,{ CRANK SHAFT } broke exactly even with the lower timing chain gear ! How does this just happen ? Just BROKE ... flush , just kinda fell off ! I was only going like 4 mph., just left my drive-way. Never been in an accident / hit anything , nothing ! Ran fine, no sign at all that this would happen. Why ??? Well, I've done some research and the other handful of people I found here on""your guys"" site for ""recalls/ defects"" , say the same thing ... *THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN * * * NOTE: (my suggestion on the matter) I'm sure that some bald headed fancy dressed old man that has been studying ford crankshafts for the last 80 years.thought he mastered the theory of stress points and ect. ect...getting paid more money than me and you have ever seen.but in realty has gotten no where.there is a bolt in the center of the crankshaft which holds the pulley on,and there are so many threads on the inside of the crankshaft that this bolt threads in if that bolt was only ahalf inch longer using up all the threads and hollow place on the inside of the crankshaft.my crank shaft would not of broke off one and a half inches from the end ford needs to recall this part it has been measured wrong ,fire that man that is working on your crankshafts he just cost me a new motor,well that is my opinion and ford motor company you owe me a new motor man up and pay me i will never buy another ford EVER!!!
