Front wheel drive not working on AWD 1998 Ford Explorer. Problem, there is a CV joint on the rear of the shaft. When it goes out so does the front wheel drive. Don't purchase at Ford Dealership unless you are ready to speed upwards of $650.00. You can purchase a new (serviceable) front shaft from used parts houses such as Bill's Used Parts in VA for around $250.00. The new ones have a u-joint on both ends instead of a u-joint on one end and a CV joint on the other end. Takes less than an hour to take the old one out andput the new one in. Easy to do!
