Explorer XLT V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 98,000 miles

I never noticed how loud my Explorer idled till I kept my windows rolled down while going through a fast food drive thru line. And it's wierd, I never do that, but this time that I did, I could hear something from the back end of my car vibrating SO LOUD I could barely hear myself think. Then I thought about it, and my car always idled loud. I could hear it from inside, infact, I could FEEL it inside sometimes, but it's never seemed to have caused a problem with how the car drives, so whatever. Ol' Bessy's getting old and making strange noises!

Explorer XLT 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 130,000 miles

I also have a noise in the engine. My mechanic said it was the tensioner that pushes in the timing chain. He said that he would have to pull the engine and tear it apart to fix it.$$$$$$$

Explorer XLT 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 61,000 miles

As far as the engine sounding like it is "dieseling," or as others call it, like marbles in a can, the dealer is right in that this is normal. This happened to my Explorer at 25,000 miles and my dealer actually showed me a TSB that describes the sound, and added that I try using Synthetic oil. I started using Mobil 1 and the sound went away completely. Every once in awhile, I can hear the slightest faint of this sound while it is running in the garage. This sound had not affected the vehicle in anyway and I now have 61,000 miles on it.

This is a 4 Liter EFI engine. The noise is heard from the lower part of the engine. It sounds like it is dieseling. A Ford dealer/repair shop says that there is nothing that can be done. They even have replaced this engine and it still happens. If this is not happening on all engines shouldn't those that have the problem be fixed or replaced???
