The contact owns a 2001 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the vehicle leaked anti-freeze and transmission fluid. There was also rust underneath the vehicle and a hole in the running boards, which almost caused them to detach. The contact claimed that the ground could be seen through the hole. The vehicle also produced thick smoke. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The dealer was not contacted. The contact planned to have the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 170,000.

I have a 2001 Explorer and the paint has been peeling off for a couple of years. If I wash it with high pressure, the paint will blow off the hood. Paint has bubbled and come off on the hood, tailgate and both quarter panels over the rear wheels. I hand wash it at this point to minimize more paint loss.

Consumers daughter was driving the vehicle when some one cut in front of her. Taking evasive actions to avoid a crash the vehicle rolled over twice. The vehicle was purchased with Firestone tires on them. As a precaution, consumer had all 4 tires replaced. The roll over was not caused by tire delamination. Consumer states because of the rollover risks involved with the Firestone tires on this particular SUV is the reason consumer replaced the Firestone tires as a preventive measure. Despite the precaution the vehicle rolled over. Consumer would like NHTSA to reconsider its decision not to initiate a saftey investigation of the Ford Explorer.
