One thing you missed. The P0300 error can be caused by a bad MAF or Mass Air Flow Sensor. I had a problem with P0171 and P0174 errors and cleaned the MAF sensor. I reset my codes and it ran fine for a couple of days, then I started getting P0300 errors and other related error codes, and performance sucked. I talked with a friend who owns a repair shop, and he suggested the MAF had failed. I changed it, and now it runs better than it has in years.

Explorer XLS Sohc 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 114,954 miles

When starting during cold weather the car would roar up to 4000 RPM and hold steady for 30 seconds, then stall. Took it to mechanic and he said it was the IAC valve (idle air controller) which was a $250 job.

Second IAC valve and two days later the car stalls on startup again. Took it back to mechanic and he put another one in under warranty.

Third IAC valve and two days later the car keeps stalling. Took it back to mechanical and he puts a different brand in.

Fourth IAC valve and begins to stall at startup again. Mechanic says it may be a vacuum leak and fixes a vacuum leak.

Car begins to work properly again.

One year later I find that the timing chain tensioner is shot and am facing a $2000 repair bill.

Went and bought a Toyota for $1800 and scrapped the Ford. Will never buy a Ford again.

Thought Explorers were great trucks so spent a lot of time looking for one. I guess the name Exploder is a better name. Trying to start you car and having it stall when you start it its not good thing.
