Explorer Eddie Bauer V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 27,500 miles

Our Ford dealership can't seem to get it corrected, nor can the Ford techs they are dealing with. We have had the megatronics reset and replaced as well as the transmission rebuilt but still the lunging and jerking continues and now we are out of warranty so the dealerships eagerness to help has absolutely become non-existent. Any recommendations?

2nd Dealer finally delivered on the latest SB and loaded a new program to the TCM and the PCM and it drives normal now (very minor hard shifting observed, acceptable). I have not experienced the lunging problem since. Time will tell and when I hook up my camper may tell the final story but I am satisfied for now.

Explorer Limited 4.6L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 21,000 miles

Same issues as other people, lunges forward when coming to a stop, at times it seems as if you had been rear-ended. Had received two program updates with no help. Third time the dealer measured the depth of the tread of my tires and said that since one time had deeper tread it was causing the 4 wheel drive unit to engage which was causing the lunging. They didn't have much to say when I told them I had to replace that tire a week ago and the transmission problem had been going on for a year. The dealer said the transmission was normal and could not find a problem. Then for the next couple months the problem was getting much worst. Then driving along and engine revs up and no gears at all. No forward or reverse, wrench shows up on display. Towed to dealer, and the torque converter and hyd. pump in transmission. Also latest reprogramming. Picked up explorer from dealer and when returning the rental car to the Enterprise, the explorer came close to lunging toward their front door. Wrench came on display again. Again returned to dealer and kept rental car. This time the Megatronics unit was replaced. This time while they were test driving the explorer, the wrench came back on. This time they said the new torque converter must have been defective, so it was replaced again. After 18 days in the shop, It now seems better than ever. No problems yet, but then again its only been 1 day since I got it back.

Thanks to Robert M.!!!!! I had the transmission valve body assy, Part number 8L2Z-7Z369-A- Module 336035 replaced a few weeks ago. Its like having a new car. No jolts, jerks, bumps... the transmission is smooth! I've been told by Ford that they will be releasing another new program and I'll have to bring it back, but that is a small price to pay for finally having a $40,000 automobile drive like its suppose to. I love my Explorer again!

Afte 18 months, Ford finally got it right. If you are experiencing the hard shifting at low speeds, take it to the dealership. I got mine fixed Dec. 2007 after 12 months of agony. Now the truck shifts as smooth as a Lincoln.

Explorer EB 4.6L

  • Automatic transmission

I have an apt to take it in a second time to another dealer than I bought it from, as the dealer I bought at could not reproduce the problem, and claimed it was normal. My wife almost was run down by the vehicle when she parked it on the slope by our house (normally she parks in the carport level). She called me at work and said the truck lurched forward after she put it in park and it almost took out our house HVAC unit. It still lurches when coming to a stop typically down hill or level and shifts late into second when starting off down hill. I am willing to help with action on this. Has anyone gone through the regional service manager for this as I had luck with that on my former explorer problem?

It is very funny that no more complaints have come up since my last one. What it proves to me is that Ford is like the Mafia. A couple of weird things have happened recently to me. One I received an email from some guy who never posted anything on the site telling me to chill out and that the last TSB fixed everything for him and his Explorer runs as smooth as a Cadillac. Interesting choice of words. I really think that Ford has sent people out to look for these sites of complaints to try and smooth things out with pissed off people. Second I notice that I was the 47th complaint and now I am the 49th. This just does not make sense to me. Let me know if any of you have had anyone similar experiences. I did find out that the BBB did nothing for one of us here ad I am currently going throught the BBB process. hopefully they realize that this is a bunch of crap with Ford and they should be held accountable. Until next time. we need to work together.

I only had this vehicle for a few months when it started to lunge forward, when it would come to a stop. I took it back TWICE to Seller's Sexton in Saint Robert Missouri where I bought it. They told me there was nothing wrong with it. Once I moved back home, I took it to a Ford dealership here. They told me there were updates, but couldn't do it because the computer was down. Made an appointment 45 MINUTES away and had it done there. A few months later it started again. This time the local dealer was able to update it, which they did. Once again, it started to lunge. Took it two weeks ago and in just 4 damn days it was lunging again and worse than before I took it in. The last time I took it in, I asked them that since Ford produced and started selling a vehicle they had not yet perfected, would I have to pay for updates after my warranty ran up pertaining to this same issue. Their response was yes and you really don't want to hear mine!

This is the second vehicle Ford has screwed me with. The last was a Mercury Mountaineer which believe it or not had a bad transmission when they sold it to me.

This V8 engine is connected with a miserable transmission. Like everyone else who owns this V8, it lunges, kicks and has a large jolt to it. Two re programmings of the transmission has not resolved this problem. I think I have a lemon.

We have to do something about this transmission problem. I have a dealership on my side. They told me that they can't fix it and yes these are stall tactics. I spoke with Tammy from the main headquarters dealing with the problem and found out that they are the biggest liars of all. At least the dealership acknowledge the problem and try to fix it. Ford originally had a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) out in 06/07 and after they found out that the TSB was not fixing the issues with the transmissions they instructed various dealers not to attempt to work on or repair any vehicles until a new TSB came out. The new TSB came out on 11/08/07 and they tried to fix it and it did not work again. Tammy asked if they could try again and I agreed before going to the BBB. Now let me tell you how many times I have been there. 6 times for this problem to 4 different dealerships. 4 of those times they duplicated the problem and reprogrammed the tranny, 2 times they told me that they could not duplicate it. So I was so upset with the problem and thought that Ford would fix it because this is the 6th one that I have bought from them and being a loyal customer they would treat me right but guess what they lied. She did a final investigation telling me that they would give me options and this is what she told me. We do not have any records of any transmission work or TSB. What liars. I have contacted the local news, I am finishing the BBB paperwork and really want this to blow up now like the Firestone Tire. I have tape recorded conversations with everyone that I spoke with and have them on tape saying they cant fix it and it is stall tactics. Let's do this together. I saved my money for this vehicle for two years and each time I come to a stop off the freeway it lunges forward. Talk to me people. This is wrong. I am a Police officer and have a lot of friends in Law. I will do whatever I can so let me know if you want to move forward on this. Good luck

Have had this vehicle into a couple of dealerships several times for transmission shifting problems. The last resolution they gave me was that it is a driver problem, not a vehicle problem. Of course they can never get it to act up when the service person drives the car, and I'm the only person that is having transmission problems with this model. The problem is that it's difficult to replicate. I bought this vehicle specifically to tow a boat trailer, and I'm not sure I would do that at this point. Am very disatisfied and frustrated with this car, and the support Ford has given their customers.

Update - Yesterday I finally went to Arbitration on this vehicle. I felt good about the arbitration process and wanted to let all of you know about Ford's defense. Ford originally had a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) out in 06/07 and after they found out that the TSB was not fixing the issues with the transmissions they instructed various dealers not to attempt to work on or repair any vehicles until a new TSB came out. The new TSB came out on 11/08/07. Here is the situation with the law concerning a dealer to repurchase a vehicle. The vehicle must have been in the shop for repair at a dealer at least (2) times and the manufacturer had to be contacted at least one time or your vehicle must have been in the shop 30 days or more for the same repair. Now I find it quite funny that Ford is trying to prevent people with genuine problems with their vehicles from getting their vehicles repaired. Simply if the dealerships were advised not to attempt to repair vehicles until a new TSB came out they effectively werent allowing some people with genuine problems to meet the above criteria for repurchase. I myself had my vehicle in 4 times to the dealership before they refused service and my vehicle was out of commission a total of 28 days. Therefore I hope that at least the arbitrators representing the BBB are intelligent enough to figure out what Ford is trying to do here. I do not feel as though the new TSB issued 11/08/07 is going to permanently fix anything. I think its a stall tactic by the manufacturer who honestly think their above the law. I will keep you advised as to what the outcome is with the BBB and the arbitrators decision. I do hope this information helps.

Explorer Eddie Bauer 4X4 V8

I have the same problem with my 2006 Explorer V8 4X4. I had taken it back to the dealer 3 times. The first time they said it is probably my rotors, and turned them at a cost of over $100. When the problem continued, I took it back a second time. They said the throttle body was the cause, and ordered a new one. It took about 3 weeks to arrive, but the install was covered under warranty. As you know, the problem continued.

The third time I took it back, the identified it as this know transmission issue, and said they were advised to take no action, and a new service advisory will be released on November 15th, 2007. Almost there, but I have my doubts. This problem is torturing because you know the bump is coming right before you stop, but it somehow manages to catch you off guard anyway! Sort of like a Chinese water torture. :O

I read all the complaints about hard shifting, 1st to 2nd and vice versa. I had this same problem, but it looks like Ford may have fixed it.

Ask Ford to replace the "megatronics unit" on the transmission - this worked for me. I am not making this name up. I had the exact same problem as others- 6 trips to the dealership before they made this repair that seems to work.

Explorer EX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,000 miles

After I took the car 3 times back to the Dealer, I follow the proper steps, I sent the defect notification to Ford and a copy to Florida State Attorney, Ford answered me right away, they gave me an appointment and the Inspector came and saw the car along with a Mechanic, and they decided that it was some type of an electra valve for the computer; at least that is what they told me; because according to them, the computer did not recognized when I was going slow, therefore, It turned off the engine. The car is running good; but to be honest I have my doubts, to me it is not working the same way that before. Everybody tells you, they have to give you the money back or another car, but it is not that easy, specially that I have an extended warrant. They will try any thing; before give you the money back. I will keep you post.

Good Luck

Update from Sep 5, 2012: Well, now my car has 87,000 miles and of course I fixed the radiator for the 2 times; and the transmission is worst than before but so far Ford has not recall any of the 2006 Ford EXPLORER. I will not buy any other Ford.

Explorer Eddie Bauer V8

Same problem as described below.

Had Ford service visit on 10/26.

Ford OASIS (Online Automotive Service Information System) report indicated:

"Some 2006-2007 Explorer 4Dr/Mountaineers and 2007 Explorer Sport Trac vehicles equipped with 6r60 transmission may exhibit various transmission performance issues when compared to other transmissions. Some of the shift characteristics are different than previous models due to the 100% synchronous design of the vehicles which may include transmission engagement delay when shifting between P-D, N-D, and R-D. Delayed/hesitation on 1-2 shift, 2-1, and/or 3-2 decel step in shifts. Hoot noise during cold 1st gear launches from transmission pump. TSB (technical service bulletin) 07-13-08 has been deactivated on PTS. Do not attempt to repair vehicles with these conditions. Engineering will be releasing a new TSB approximately mid-November."

It seems that a fix is in the works. Stay on top of your Ford Service Department.
