I noticed the thermostat housing started to get buildup of coolant on the outside of a seam, puddles of coolant in the valley aft of the housing and some traces of coolant on accessories at the front of the motor. I performed the replacement myself for under $100. The housing kit with thermostat runs about $50 and 2 gallons of Zerex G-05 concentrate runs about $40. You also need 2 gallons of distilled water to have enough 50% mix to refill the system.
If you have the necessary tools and abilities I recommend doing it yourself to save money for other repairs on this vehicle. This is a common problem and there are good instructional videos on the web.
There is no longer a leak at the thermostat housing but I still have coolant loss and have traced it to the radiator so will write a separate post.
