Basic description: Lose control of the car, where the steering does NOT respond well to the turns on the steering wheel.

The car starts to sway to one side, and when I try to compensate with the steering to the opposite side, the car does not respond right away. It's as if the initial turns on the wheel to do nothing, until eventually the car starts to respond. Then the car sways the other way, and again, when I try to compensate the opposite way, there is no response from the car right away.
The car seems stuck in this mode. And the traction control light comes on (see picture).
As you can imagine, this caused us to freak out and almost get into an accident.
The Ford deal says that I need a new "steering module" and new end tie rods. Total estimate $3,000!
