Explorer Limited 2.3L V4

Noticed earlier in the day some stiffness with the steering but not enough to make me think it was anything. Wife brought it home later and said all kinds of alerts started going off on the way home. I went out to start it later on and power steering was totally not working.

Car only has 26,000, but these EPAS seem to be a known issue. This car has all the lane assist and parking assist features. Now I'm thinking I won't get another car (Ford or otherwise) that has this type of steering, but it looks like a lot of manufacturers are heading in this direction.

The steering box failed in my 2017 Explorer 14 days past its 36 month warranty. The Ford dealer sent me an estimate for $2500. This is a known issue and I will be disputing the issue with Ford. I was 5 minutes from driving down a canyon with this vehicle. Had the steering failed in the canyon I can't imagine the potential injuries me and my passengers might have had.

Vehicle showed no warning signs of problems. No warnings lights, no difficulty steering. There was NOTHING to indicate a problem was imminent. Then one day while driving 60 mph on highway my steering wheel locked, an alarm started going off, and my dash board started flashing: STEERING FAILED. PARK SAFELY. Car was towed to dealership. I was informed EPAS had failed, it was not covered, and it would cost $2850 to fix. After much research I’ve learned this is a common problem and a class action lawsuit is being formed. Also, there was once a recall for the steering in the 2017 Ford Explorers. (Recall number/ 17S23) but when I called Ford they had “no available information”.
