ABS brake problems; when applying brakes in an emergency situation, under wet road conditions, the system locked up, resulting in a roll over. I had noticed this in the past and took it to a dealer and was told it was just the natural for a Ford.

On April 2, 2000 while traveling on the parks hwy. This vehicle accelerated & continued to accelerate out of the driver's control. The brakes were applied heavily for three quarters of a mile or more in order to slow the vehicle & find a place to pull to the side and attempt to turn the vehicle off. Once this was achieved, the vehicle restarted normally. Nye Ford service dept. Was contacted & a PCV kit was installed by that dealership on April 19, 2000. On August 13, 2002 this vehicle again accelerated & continued to accelerate out of the driver's control. The same procedure was used to stop T he vehicle. The vehicle started normally on the fourth attempt. During the first 3 attempts to restart the vehicle, the engine was revving out of control.

Proceeded down wet highway at 40 mph. Vehicle ahead slowed. Applied brakes, had full lockup and hit car ahead at est 7 mph speed. Antilock system did not activate at all. Had noticed tis phenomena at stop signs in wet condition before, had checked at dealer, no problem found by technician. I feel that this is a problem associated only with wet road conditions. Software problem rather than mechanical. Am aware of other cases. Although my damage minor, I feel this should be investigated due to potential serious nature of problem.

Two months after I purchased the vehicle, I noticed when on icy, snowy, or similar slippery surfaces, the anti-lock braking system "locked-up" and did not "anti-lock" as designed. This is evidenced by my rear-end sliding around sideways and no reverse brake petal pressure. I had previously owned a vehicle that had anti-lock brakes and the brake petal would push against my foot and make a vibrating noise when activated. This does not occur on this vehicle. Also, when the vehicle is cold, all four brakes will lock up when any petal pressure is applied--especially at low speeds such as pulling out of my driveway or out of a parking lot. This was brought to the attention of the Ford dealer nearest my residence (not the dealer I originally purchased the truck) on two separate occasions. The first time I took it in was at my 30,000 mile check-up about 10 months after I purchased the vehicle (August 27, 1998). They checked brakes and noted on the service invoice "could not verify." The second time I took it in was about 7 months later (March 8, 1999) after the winter season was over and had them check the system and no service was noted or performed. I took at face value that when they said nothing was wrong that there wasn't anything wrong. However, anti-lock brakes are not something that you can check year round but rather only when the pavement is slippery. They said they checked them by putting heavy pressure on the brakes and then pressing the gas pedal and ruled out failure of the ABS. I am here to tell you that even today, they still lock-up and do not function properly. I can send you photocopies of the service invoices if needed.
