The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. The contact inspected his vehicle and noticed that one of the fuel straps were covered with rust and disconnected from the fuel tank. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The contact called the manufacturer who referred him to NHTSA. The current and failure mileages were approximately 180,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F150. The contact performed repairs on the vehicle and when replacing the rear brake pads, he detected that the fuel tank straps exhibited rust corrosion. The vehicle was not ben diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 130,000. Updated 02/07/11 the fule tank straps were replaced due to rust. Updatd 02/14/11

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F150. The contact was inspecting the vehicle when he noticed that one of the fuel tank straps had fractured due to corrosion. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for repairs of diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 98,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. While driving 55 mph, the contact heard a strange noise coming from the vehicle. He pulled over and noticed that the fuel tank detached from the vehicle and fell onto the ground. He strapped it back on because it was still filled with gasoline. The vehicle was towed to his residence. The gasoline was drained and the contact is in the process of getting a new tank and straps. The dealer stated that there were no recalls for this failure. The failure and current mileages were 106,000.

Straps retaining the fuel tank failed resulting in the fuel tank dragging on the road. Was able to temporarily retain tank with ratcheting tie down strap and get vehicle home safely. I was lucky that the failure occurred at low speed, and not on a highway as this could have resulted in fire and or injuries.

: the contact stated while turning a corner at 10 mph, a loud bang was heard. The vehicle was pulled over and upon inspection, the contact found the front of the fuel tank on the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, where two of three fuel tank bands were replaced because of corrosion. This vehicle was located in a salt belt state. Updated 05/04/06

Contact stated while driving the front straps on the gas tank broke, causing the front tank to hit the ground and rupture. Consumer had just filled the tank and gasoline spilled out onto the highway. The fire department and the emergency management Agency were on the scene where this occurred. There was a report from the emergency management Agency. Consumer contacted the manufacturer, they said there were no other complaints of this nature, but for the consumer to keep his receipts in case there was a recall. The vehicle was towed from the highway to a local service dealer. The service dealer stated that one of the straps rusted.
