The contact owns a 1998 Ford F150. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs under NHTSA campaign id number: 11V385000 (fuel system, gasoline: Storage: Tank assembly: Mounting). The dealer made repairs to the vehicle but shortly after, the vehicle began to experience a failure in which fuel would leak when refueling. The dealer informed the contact that they were not responsible for the failure and that she would have to pay to repair the fuel tubing and the fuel tank. The manufacturer was notified who advised that unless they saw the leak from the straps that they would not pay for the repairs. The failure mileage was 250,000. Updated 11/03/11. Updated 11/14/11 there was a slight leak noticed at fueling and the contact noticed one of the fuel tank straps had broken off and the fuel tank was tilted down. The dealer replaced the fuel tank straps to the vehicle. But, immediately after, fuel began to spray onto the ground when attempting to refuel. The dealer explained it was clearly related to the failure repairs as identified by the recall hotline and than many customers were experiencing the problem. The dealer explained that the hotline approved the repairs and tank replacement for some and then arbitrarily not for others. The recall hotline refused to make any repairs other than the fuel tank strap replacement. The dealer informed the contact that due to the recall refusal, he would have to pay for the repair to replace the fuel tank. The manufacturer was notified and stated that unless they saw the leak from the straps that they would not pay for the repairs. Updated 01.23.12

Driving 1998 Ford F-150 4 X 4 truck on dry, flat, smooth asphalt surface road at 45 mph when I noticed a loud metallic sound. Pulled off road immediately and noticed strong odor of gasoline. Looked under vehicle and observed front end of gas tank was on the ground, leaking gas profusely. Turned off engine and immediately called 9-1-1 because of fire potential. Fire, ems, and local sheriff responded. Front gas tank mounting strap failed, causing tank to land on pavement, rupturing fuel tank with resultant gasoline spill, contained by fire department. Gas tank removed by fire department, truck towed for repairs, approximated at $1,500 to replace damaged fuel tank, fuel pump, and mounting straps. Fire department reported to me that several occurrences with Ford F-150 fuel tank mounting strap failures have been reported. Updated 09/14/11 the consumer stated when the fuel tank fell to the ground, fuel began leaking. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop. The front strap broke on the left top portion due to corrosion. The consumer lost five gallons of gas. The repairs cost over $1000. Updated 09/21/11
