On my way to work, the fuel tank straps of our 1998 Ford F150 rusted through and the tank fell. Luckily it did not happen on the interstate, but while waiting for the stoplight on the off ramp. I pulled into the parking lot with the tank hanging and parked it. To get it home, we used tow straps to put the tank back in place and drove slowly with hazard lights home. We are currently deciding whether to fix it ourselves or park it.

Owner started smelling gas and suspected a problem with gasoline tank. He made an appointment with rockton automotive. Repair shop requested to not fill the tank full. One gas tank strap was broken, the other rusted. The gas tank was no longer sitting level. Both straps were replaced. Owner has the oem straps if you need them.

I read this week about Ford F150 fuel tank straps breaking, my tank dropped from my 1998 F150 last summer, I was up the street from home when I heard something dragging, thought it was the car behind me, as I pulled into my driveway, a gusher of gas came pouring out from under my truck, upon inspection, the front part of the gas tank was dragging and made a hole on the bottom edge. Later I jacked up the tank and secured it with rope so the tow company could take it in for repairs.

With a full fuel tank, pulling away from a stop sign, the front of the gas tank fell. It dragged a few feet before stopping creating a hole and gas leakage. Had it towed to a service garage that had to replace gas tank and straps. Mechanic stated the tank straps had rusted.

Our 1998 Ford F-150's gas tank fell off the truck in our driveway. The local fire department was called and they advised us that the rear strap completely deteriorated. They were able to cut the front strap with minimal effort as it was deteriorated as well. We were very fortunate it did not fall when in the truck was in motion.

My 1998 Ford F-150 fits the summary of the NHTSA campaign id # 97V171000. My truck is currently in with the dealer for another reason, including the speed control recall. However, they will not fix the gear position indicator because they state it is not a Ford recall, regardless of what the NHTSA site indicates as a (recall date of 10/07/97) because Ford has to make a recall notice. My indicator is off by one (it says I'm in 'R' when rally in 'P' and so forth). 'I understand not doing a mass recall for this, but when a vehicle is in for a mandatory recall of the speed control catching fire, one would think they would repair a vehicle that is experiencing another known defect as indicated in NHTSA campaign 97V171000. Also, it is in for damage related to the fuel tank, and even though they are replacing the fuels tank and many other items attached to it (I.e. lines etc.) they don't feel it is warranted to address another NHTSA recall related to the leaf spring potentially puncturing the tank. I own a 1998 Ford F-150 with 4.2L engine for the past 3 winters I have had problems that when I take my foot of the accelerator, the engine continues to run at high RPM. This makes it very difficult to break. I recently found on the web NHTSA recall # 98V007. Which seemed to describe my problem exactly. When I called my local Ford delarer, they stated that my vehicle was not covered by the recall
