After I filled up with gas, I smelled gas. After this happened a couple of times, I noticed gas dripping from the tank. Upon inspection, I noticed that the leak was near the filler neck, but the root cause was that one of the tank straps was completely rusted away, the other is severely corroded; the leak at the neck is because the weight of the tank is being supported by the neck. I see that several dozen cases have occurred where the tank has fallen out of the trucks going down the road, and the "crack staff" at NHTSA has been "studying" this since September to see if this is a "safety concern", but they are either too inept, too corrupt, or too lazy to do their jobs. This is the same lack of concern for american consumers that allowed people to die from the Toyota sudden acceleration issue. Take you R time guys, you are only playing roulette with human lives!!!!! I will quote [xxx] "shame on NHTSA for not doing your job." I hope the new chairs of energy and commerce and oversight and reform have more respect for human life than the last ones. If so, NHTSA may be compelled to do its job! information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Accelerated from intersection; heard noise; thought was exhaust pipe dropped and was being dragged; smelled fuel; stopped and saw that fuel tank had fallen onto the road; tank more than 3/4 full had split and was leaking fuel; called 911 for fire department and police; fire department lifted tank and fuel gushed out; fire department used a wedge of wood to plug tank as good as possible though tank was nearly empty by that time; tow truck arrived; towed truck to dealer; cleaned up more about 19 gallons of fuel; will discuss repairs with dealer tomorrow; assumption is that a new tank, straps and possible fuel line will be needed. Do not believe police made a report since no accident or injuries occurred. Updated 12/08/10

I have a 2000 Ford F-150 4X4. I was driving on St rt 13 in new lexington Ohio and had the gas tank holding straps rust off and had the gas tank fall off. My truck seemed to be in ok shape on the outside. This led me to check out the rest of the truck more and then I have also found that the frame, cab corners and lots of other parts are rusting completely. I have since then replaced the straps with new ones from Ford. As for the rest of the truck the rust is getting worse by the day I have used rust stoppers and cleaned as much off as I could. I still have a bank note so I have to drive it. I hope and pray that I am not in any accidents for I believe the truck would suffer great damage due to the rust!!!

My brother and I each purchased new 2000 Ford F-150 pickups in June of 2000. On August 27, 2010 I notices that the rear strap attaching my fuel tank to the vehicle had broken. I immediately replaced the badly rusted and broken strap without any loss of fuel or further damage. I inspected my brothers fuel tank and his rear strap is likely to fail. He will replace and avoid the same failure I experienced.

I own a 2000 Ford F150. Approximately a month ago, I noticed one side of my fuel tank was hanging down. I went to salvage yard and obtained a strap off another F150 and replaced the broken one. The other side is rusted as well, but has held so far.

My 2000 Ford F-150 fuel tank fell out of the vehicle this past June 2010. The vehicle was purchased new and was dealer under coated to prevent rusting. The tank at the time was full of fuel and was within minutes of having been traveling down the freeway. The vehicle was parked for a short period of time before the fuel tank fell to the ground. On inspection the forward strap was missing on the tank was on the ground front first. If this would have happened while driving on the freeway it would have surely ended in a fire.

My husband and daughter filled the gas tank of our Ford F-150 truck, year 2000. Just minutes later while on I-265 about to merge onto I-65, the gas tank fell off and dragged the highway. A policeman stopped to help and he called the fire department. They came and put a fire retardant on the gas spill. The truck was towed to a service center and a new gas tank was strapped on with new straps. Updated 08/01/11 updated 12/05/11

Have a 2000 Ford F150 had tank filled with gas and was driving down road when gas tank fell of found that both straps that held tank had rusted through thankfully we were not moving fast or it is hard to tell what would have happened there is only 125000 mile on vehicle and has been maintained feel that an incident like this is uncalled for that there should have been a safer way of mounting since vehicle had even been rustproofed we are thankfull that this did not happen a high speed for we feel that something grave could have happened to us and anyone behind us if and when it may have exploded.

On 12/12/06 a lady turned left in front of me causing me to broadside her. I was doing approx 40 mph at the time. All her air bags deployed. None of mine did, even though the entire impact of the accident was across my front end. Additionally my fuel cutoff switch did not function. When the vehicles came to rest, and I recollected my wits, I realized the engine was still running and at close to full throttle.

: the contact stated the vehicle was driving 55 mph off the interstate on normal road conditions when a fire was noticed coming from the underbody of the vehicle. The contact pulled over just as the fire spread throughout the vehicle. The contact was not injured. A police and fire report were taken. The fire department could not determine the cause of the fire. The vehicle was towed to a local independent mechanic, who determined the fire could have possibly been caused by the fuel, but could not find the component involved in the fire. The manufacturer was called and stated the vehicle was included in a recall regarding the vehicle speed control, however the contact found a possible NHTSA recall # 06E056000 regarding the fuel system, gasoline that related more to the fire that occurred on the vehicle. However, the vehicle was not included in this recall due to the VIN. The manufacturer was not claiming responsibility nor provided further assistance. The vehicle was deemed totaled.
