The torque converter on my 2005 Ford F-150 has had two torque converters fail in the drive train. One failed within the 3 year or 36,000 mile warranty period. The second torque converter failed around 50,000 miles. I believe this information warrants an investigation into the Ford line of torque converters for the Ford F-150 truck line.

Yes my 4X4 is not working and I have read over 300 post easy about the same problem people are having. Thousands of people are having the same problem I have had with my truck. Obviously if there are that many people with the same year of truck and same problem why isn't Ford doing a recall? they say the problem is the iwe, solenoid, the problem why it happens in the first place is there isn't a rain cover over the solenoid underneath the hood. I do believe that this is a huge safety hazard and almost caused me to be in an accident about three weeks ago because my four wheel drive went out! Ford please do a recall before someone gets hurt or even die! I do believe that Ford should be responsible for this issue and have a recall to get these vehicles fixed.

F-150

  • 70,000 miles
The contact owns a 2005 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the four wheel drive feature malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to engage the four wheel drive system while driving 60 mph. The front end of the vehicle shook violently when the failure occurred. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where the dealer replaced the four wheel drive sensor because water had entered the old sensor and caused the malfunction. The replacing of the four wheel drive sensor did not remedy the issue. The contact called the manufacturer and they advised the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer. The failure mileage was 70,000.

I was coming to a stop when the transmission would not release from gear and then finally did with a loud clunk. When I went to drive forward the engine revved up and then jumped into gear jumping the truck forward. There was no warning for a transmission failure it all of a sudden lost all gears. The mechanic at the Ford dealership said it was a known issue to them and that one of the internal seals probably broke and caused a "catastrophic transmission failure."

2005 Ford F150, 139,000 miles. Truck started making grind/buzz noise intermittently and would stop when accelerator was released. Took to Ford dealer and was told 4WD vacuum switch damaged from water and driver side independent wheel end needed replaced. New switch has water shroud to prevent water damage which would indicate this is a known problem.

Truck would idle extremely bad, when you cut it off it wouldn't start. This started happening on Friday, December 31, 2010. I took the truck to Firestone and they run a diagnostic test which at the time did not show the throttle body problem because the "check engine" light was not on at the time. However, Firestone replaced the fuel filter, did a tune up and replaced the battery and removed the gas tank to clean it but this still did not resolve the problem and this cost me $369. The truck was then taken to a Ford dealership and on the way there the "check engine" light did come on. The dealership advised us after the diagnostic test that we needed a throttle body and electronic egr valve which will cost $1330.

On certain model Ford vehicles using their 5.4 liter engine (which includes Ford/Lincoln models) the spark plugs are of a 3 part design which will separate and shoot out of the top of the engine while running causing serious injury or even death and extensive damage to the engine. Ford is aware of this problem as I have been told by several service managers but Ford refuses to do anything about it because for every vehicle repair is a $1500 repair bill for the dealer/Ford. For people whom don't have $1500 to replace spark plugs which should be a $50 repair, they remain at risk.

As I was driving down a major highway in South Carolina, I felt like my transmission might be slipping in my 2005 Ford F-150. I took it immediately to a local and reputable mechanic who tested the transmission and subsequently informed me that it was the engine, specifically the spark plugs. In their investigation it was determined that 4 of my 8 spark plugs were broken. They had to use a special tool, developed by Ford just for this "problem", in order to extract the broken plugs. The mechanic stated that Ford should have to recall these or forced to reimburse consumers for the expensive repairs due to a design error. Upon researching on-line, I was totally amazed at how many and how much a problem people have had with these plugs and the consumer is paying for their defect. This is not right. The total cost for this repair for me was $358.55. Tell me how many other cars or trucks require this type of repair to replace spark plugs? I would L like for your Agency to investigate the number of repairs consumers have had to make because of this defect. [xxx] SC drivers license no. [xxx] VIN [xxx] thank you for investigating this defect. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Fordmotor company on the 2005 Ford F150 there has been over 1000 complaints about the actuator on the four wheel drive there is a vacuum switch that operates them water runs down off the cowl contaminating the vac.line causing the actuator to go out therewas a service bulletin put out showing that they new of this problem and did nothing to correct it. The switch controls the vac. To the actuator with no vac. The four wheel drive is engage when.to make it simply it takes vacuum to disengage the four wheel drive if you are going down the road and the switch fails what's going to happen you will ruin the four wheel drive actuators and could get into or cause a accident.

The contact owns a 2005 Ford F-150. The contact stated that she heard a grinding noise while driving at any speed. The noise was heard intermittenly. The dealer could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle later locked into 4-wheel drive while driving less than 55 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they found that the solenoid and the switch for the 4-wheel drive were defective. The contact paid $185 to have the vehicle repaired. The dealer was unsure if the repair would correct the failure because the electrical switch was susceptible to water damage. The current and failure mileages were less than 37,217. Updated 08/11/09.

While driving, the vacuum solenoid for the 4 wheel drive tries to engage the 4 wheel drive - even at highway speeds- resulting in a horrible sound. The sound was "like I had run over a shopping cart or hit something in the road and was dragging it under the truck". this happened 5 times in two days in less than 30 miles of total driving. The noise is so loud and alarming that it made me immediately apply the brakes and pull to the side of the road because I thought I had hit something/someone. At first I wondered if my muffler or drive shaft or some other part had fallen off of the truck. This "false engagement" of the 4 wheel drive happens without any warning in all kids of driving conditions (slow, fast, breaking or accelerating). A new, redesigned (now has a cover on it to keep moisture out- which was causing the failure) vacuum solenoid was installed on truck - a $27 part. Dealership kept old part. Tech. At dealer told me that this part will go bad at some point and need replacing on all the trucks with the part. He said "not if but when". Ford knew about the problem - hence the redesigned part. Ford has not notified owners of this part and it's impending failure.

Truck will not disengage from 4hi and even though it is turned off it will make a terrible grinding sound, which I think has something to do with the transfer case. The light doesn't come on when for 4hi, so I am also thinking there is something wrong with the relay switch.. also our truck vibrates, but has only done it twice, however the truck only has 68 thousands kilometers on it, it is like a brand new truck. We have had it to the Ford dealer and they say nothing is wrong with it. Are they actually waiting for someone to die in one of these trucks. How many complaints does it take?
