F-150 5.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 78,000 miles

Having the typical Triton 5.4L issues w/the spark plugs breaking off when changed. The plugs were changed way before the typical 100,000miles (I was at 78,000) but noticed the truck jerking and missing so I brought it in. The mechanic just smiled and brought out a bunch of previous invoices of people with the exact same issue; and telling us most of the times the plugs break off in the engine so it's going to be between $600-$1200!! Great job Ford. How has this not become a recall issue?

F-150 XLT 5.4L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 160,331 miles

I was sold this vehicle privately, on the impression that the seller had tried to remedy a shuttering problem when the vehicle reached 80km/h. He thought it was a fuel pump and had it replaced.

When I first took the vehicle on the entrance ramp onto the highway I found it shuttered at 80km/h. Obviously this is a potential disaster considering my inability to accelerate up to highway speeds in a quick and efficient manner. I was only able to accelerate up to 100km/h after taking my foot off of the accelerator and very slowly pushing the accelerator back down occasionally feeling the shutter. When I have the cruise control on, the engine will shutter when I am going up hill. I have received a quote to replace my sparks plugs which my mechanic says "might" fix this, at a staggering cost of a minimum $500, plus $80 for each broken spark plug. He informed me that these spark plugs are a major pain in his ass to remove and could possibly break off causing catastrophic damage to god knows what else in my engine. Mind you I have just handed over $300 for what was thought to be the cause of flushing the transmission fluid and adding some conditioner.

Now I know vehicles are a money pit, always have been, but this particular problem seems a little too common to be a coincidence. Lets be honest, these spark plugs are a horrible design to an otherwise fantastic vehicle. If Ford cannot admit to this flaw, they have lost my confidence in their ability to stand by their product. They make vehicles and if they make mistakes making those vehicles, people lives are at stake. This isn't pillow making, basket weaving or tennis rackets we're talking about, these are hundreds of pounds of steel carrying the people we love around at high speeds. There isn't room for this kind of error to just be overlooked, this is serious, and it needs to be addressed A.S.A.F'n.P.

I have a 5.4 2006 f150 that needed plugs. They broke 6 out of 8 plugs. Ford really needs to help or stand behind this problem.
