Who ever heard of spark plugs backing out of the socket??? Ford knows that this is a problem with the 5.4 engines and have agreed to a class action law suit. They also know about this problem with the 4.6 engines but do nothing. Shame on you Ford.

Ford is missing the boat on this one! Spark plug blew out. Mechanic replaced it for $350, then it blew out again two days later. We were in process of selling vehicle so now we are SOL! We don't have $4,000 to replace engine and our family needs a second car. Never again will I buy a Ford. They do not stand behind their product!

Thread's went bad for my spark plugs. I like Ford. But they have a problem with there spark plug thread design. I hear this is happening in many Fords. if you have this issue, sign in to this site and file a complaint here. Also, I thought my lifter's were ticking, but after I replaced my spark plugs and inginition coils. The ticking went away. I'm almost certain the helicoil and spark plug and boot, that was all a little wrong and worn contributed to my ticking noise.

It had cost me an arm and a leg to get this issue repaired. Not to mention time off from work.

I want Ford to pay for my spark plugs. Spark plugs broke off in truck
- Zachary C., Troy, NY, US
The truck started knocking again and I automatically assumed that the similar problem from before happened to the engine. I had it towed to a mechanic and diagnosed. Apparently one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine and destroyed both the threading and the coil. This was an engine with less then 30,000 miles on it. Further more one of the cylinders broke off the crank shafts. The engine has to be replaced again. The engine has low miles on it. I had to have the engine replaced a few years ago due to a heavy engine knock. Apparently the truck still has part warranties on it but Ford is refusing to acknowledge the parts warranty because the Truck warranty has expired.

GM HAS BEEN HIT WITH A LOT OF RECALLS. FORD IS JUST STAYING UNDER THE RADAR ON THIS JUNK MOTOR. SPARK PLUGS THAT BREAK. REMOVING THEM THAT COSTS $500 TO FIX.. EXHAUST MANIFOLDS THAT CREAK AT 80,000 MILES COSTS $900 TO FIX. AND THEIR WONDERFUL TIMING CHAIN THEY HAVE. THAT COSTS FROM $1500 TO $4000 TO FIX. HOW DO THESE BASTARDS SLEEP AT NIGHT? I DO NOT THINK I AM ALONE ON THIS!!
Update from Jun 25, 2015: CALLED FORD ON FORD 5.4 L SPARK PLUG LAWSUIT. THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT?????
- Rob L., Millington, MI, US
Ford had us replace the spark plugs early because the spark plugs were faulty and we ran the risk of additional damage to the engine if they weren't replaced. There was a chance the plugs would break during removal and that would have cost additional, but we were lucky and one broke. We were lucky that none broke because the cost could have been a lot more and many people have had to. Our personal problem is that we had to incur this expense early.

If Ford knew that the ceramic spark plugs would break when changed and a special tool had to be used to extract, then this should have been done. If the dealership selling the vehicle new or used knew the customer should have been informed. My husband has a Ford F150 which is only driven when he is not working, the truck begin to miss and pull back in forth, he was instructed to get spark plugs changed. He called the dealership to ask how much, he was told $800.00. Then he was told why. Because the spark plugs break. My husband located help to change plugs 7 of the 8 broke using the extraction tool borrowed. However number eight could not be retrieved.
Tires Plus wanted $2500.00 just for labor cost to remove the heads to fix problem. So we went with a different mechanic. Total bill $2630.00. I went back to dealership to complain, and service tech who originally said $800.00, stated but we only charge a max of $1000.00 if plugs can't be extracted. I asked why he didn't tell us and he stated because we have the tools to get them the first time. Either way, no one should have to pay $850.00, nor $1850.00 to have spark plugs changed. At this time, this fourth Ford that we have bought will be our last.

a tune up SHOULD not cost 550.00!!!! my mechanic broke 6 of the 8 plugs?? he knows his stuff trust me. FORD should be ashamed. what a nightmare. glad I didn't try this at home, they should step up and do the right thing.

I have had a FORD all my life. When I purchased this F-150 which was $20,000 I never expected that a tune up could cost $1200. This came about when I had a talk with the place that is going to fix my F-150. The problem is that FORD had a problem with removal of the spark plugs, for the year 2004-2008. When removing the plugs they BREAK .This causes more work for the shops to fix. This has been going on since 2004 and this is the first time I was aware of it.
1. have to have a special tool to remove the broken spark plug
2. then there is a die to re-tap the holes
I lost my job due to a disability. Money is tight. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY FORD HAD THIS PROBLEM AND DUMPED IT ON THE CONSUMERS. INSTEAD OF A NORMAL TUNE UP, IT COST THE CONSUMER 4 TIMES THE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO FIT.
I will be trading in my ford for a GMC.

Sparkplug blew out with a sleeve attached. Ford supposedly replaced the head 15k miles prior.

6 of the 8 Spark plugs broke off on my 5.4 triton during a routine tune up. Ive never heard of such a problem. After reading stories and complaints on line, and listening to local mechanics and part store workers, all had the same view. Oh, you have one of those motors, good luck the spark plugs break off during a simple tune up, and then your in for a head job or a new motor. <p>Well they were right, they can't get the remaining pieces out. Now why should I have to pay for something that was a design failure, and why should anyone else, this should of been on a recall or a class action lawsuit. My cost for a new rebuilt motor is $6,800.00 installed. I have only 2 truck payments left and now this.. Plus I don
t have the money to have this fixed. I will listen to any advice

Another episode of where spark plugs are causing rough engine idle and bad lurching while driving. Plugs and wires were replaced which helped for about three weeks. There should have been a recall on this issue. Will make me think twice before buying another Ford vehicle. The sky high cost of a new vehicle should not include having to fork out $$$'s on repairs due to poorly designed vehicles. Where is the American pride in things we produce?

WHY IS FORD NOT HELPING!!!!
Plug spit out on #3
Truck is in shop for tune up
Cost I can only imagine will be ridiculous

I just wanted to note that I read a previous comment on how hard the plugs were to get out and I wanted to note that I talked it over with my mechanic (I am a previous race car owner) and we decided to try to use an air gun or impact wrench to remove the plugs. He has done some before but has had a lot of trouble like almost everyone else who does this. He wanted to try the air gun this time so I let him. He said they all came out fine with no problems. I am stating this so if anyone who reads this, might want to mention it to a mechanic who is going to change spark plugs. Keep in mind, there are special tools to remove them from Snapon. I hear they help quite a bit when the plugs break while trying to take them out. My mechanic also only charged me $300. I hear some mechanics are charging a lot more. This is why I wrote on here. Check around before getting this done. I trust my mechanic so this is why we tried the air gun. It apparently spins the plug fast enough to break the carbon up & let it start threading out.
Now, not even a week later, I am driving on the highway and my truck starts stuttering like a really rough road. It felt like it was in the rear end or transmission. I called my mechanic on the way home as I don't work on cars anymore. He has run across this before and knew what I was talking about. I also told him the check engine light just came on and he said it is probably a coil going bad. He said it wasn't any big deal. Taking it in the morning. This is my last Ford after dealing with these two problems
Good luck to all Ford users.

Another Ford design failure. Spark plug blowing out of the head. Last Ford I'll ever buy. Just to let you know I have a 2007 Ford, an F150, and an Escape. The F150 had the misfire issue at 65000 miles and the Escape had the transmission issue with 2nd and 4th gear bands breaking with less than 40000 miles.
Who at Ford is designing their drive trains? Both were purchased new in 2007.
- Chuck W., Uniontown, PA, US
This is really wrong that I am afraid to replace my own spark plugs for fear of destroying my engine. Ford should be forced to fix their screw up. Your average working man can not afford 500.00 dollars to have spark plugs replaced. This will cause your average person to trade their fords in for a toyota or chevy. This is a sad day for americans.
- Guido B., pittsburgh, pa, US
Ok Ford has done it again another bull sh*t design. Who in gods name designs a truck to have sh*tty spark plugs that break when you take them out? every other company uses a normal spark plug but ford again was stupid and wont back their flaw. The motorcraft plugs are known to break when you remove them and will need to use a special tool by ford to get the broken part out. if the tool pushes the broken part of the conductor into the cylinder head you have to remove the entire head to get the broken part out. Ford garage quoted me at 900+ for the job my stomach dropped. I have changed plugs in all my cars until now and because i risk breaking a plug off in the engine it is going to cost me not ford. this is more bull sh*t than i can handle. i am calling for this week to rip them a new one and bitch. we the consumer should not have to pay for the flaw by ford. they are the ones not to use a Champion Spark plug this is not my issue. it is not like this is a Lambo and needing a performance plug this is a 310 hp gas guzzling V8.

Was driving home from picking up my son and the spark plug just blew out.
