Steady (or carrier) bearing went on my truck. I was accelerating to 50km/h when the whole truck started vibrating/rumbling (like running over a ton of rumble strips/washboards). Took it to the shop and the mechanic had to cut and replace the whole shaft. He said it was a poor design since most other shafts are 2 pieces and he can replace the $100 bearing instead of having to order a $650 shaft assembly. He also said it is bizarre how it failed for such a new vehicle.
The problem is contributed to poor design by Ford. Now that I have a new shaft, I notice a few key differences. It shifts much smoother at lower gears and there was a low whirring noise at highway speeds that has gone away (I thought the whirring was probably just the natural vibration of the gear box and shaft). If you have any of those symptoms, your F150 might be on the verge of crapping out too
