Towing my travel trailer home from a trip, going up a moderate hill at about 50 mph, heard loud thunk, pulled over, then vehicle wouldn't move any farther. Had truck & trailer towed to dealer, they have just told me that "most of the gears are in pieces in the transmission fluid pan." Will require about 2 weeks to replace. Got the f-150 specifically to tow this trailer, got max tow package (11000 pound tow rating) to make sure I had plenty of capability to tow my 5800 pound (empty), 6500 pound (as towed) trailer. Now I'll be hesitant to tow the trailer even after the truck is fixed, which makes the truck practically useless to me.

2010 F150 Platinum, 5.4L V8 with factory standard transmission. During times of intermittent times of hard acceleration, particularly with passing at highway speeds, the truck is unresponsive, does not accelerate, and begins to slow. This normally occurs when the gas tank is full, the bed is empty, there is no towing involved, and you've reduced your speed prior to passing (i.e. coming up on a slow driver). After a considerable 5-10 second pause (and while you are in the passing lane meeting oncoming traffic!) the truck will shudder with a loud noise, then accelerate. Due to its intermittent, the dealership has a difficult time replicating and resolving the problem.

Two weeks prior to complete failure,truck taken to Bill Estes Ford in Brownsburg Indiana with hard downshift problem. Two days at dealership, not diagnosed. Dec 29, complete failure of transmission. Ford roadside assistance was called, was told it would be towed to Andy Mohr Ford Truck center in Indianapolis (less than five miles away) , not given choice of where to send it. It is now Jan 6, 2011. No repairs have been made and I have been without a vehicle since. I am sure glad there is a BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY.
Update from Jan 9, 2011: Went by Andy Mohr Truck service center in person on Tuesday Jan 4th. Was told by the service manager that the transmission is to be replaced with a new one. Should be here tomorrow I should have truck in the afternoon. Today is Sunday Jan 9th. No truck, no vehicle at all. Sure would feel confident if I was out of town and had this problem.

I bought a 2010 XL, the cheap one. Just rolled 10k miles, on its first road trip. Truck doesnt see much freeway time. On the road trip, passing above 55, tranny slammed down HARD, and continued doing it. It would slip, then jerk real hard. Took it to a dealer an hour away, because where we bought both vehiclces are service is garbage. Got a call from the srvc mgr, said it has an internal failure. Didnt actually talk to him, so thats all i know now.
Sound familiar to anyone? Ford gonna try to pull any tricks to get out of paying for it?

The pickup was having problems in reverse. After checking into the problem, the reverse band was broken. It was removed and replaced. During the road test I noticed the overdrive was not engaging (the truck acted like it was in neutral) as soon as I pressed the overdrive button at the end of the shift handle the transmission engaged and I has all gears. Once again I removed the transmission. This time the retaining ring for the intermediate sprang was broken. I replaced it then drove it and the overdrive worked for about 15 miles then went out again.
I can't believe any one would ever put this transmission in use for any application.
