This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Ford dealer.
The transmission has been worked on four times under warranty. It is a recurring problem. It has locked up twice in heavy traffic at highway speeds. Lucky no one got hurt. All the Ford do is adjust the computer they tell me. Last maybe six months to a year.

I was driving west on I10 at 75 mph on the Gila Indian reservation with the cruise control on, when the truck decided to down shift into 2nd gear limp mode (which I didn't realize until later). Which at that time locked the rear tires up on sent me skidding down the road. Luckily I hit the transmission into neutral to gain control but then the cruise control decided to gain speed sending the engine to the red line before I could turn off the cruise. I was able to coast to a stop in the emergency lane which at that time I turned the engine off. I noticed before shutting the engine off that the wrench symbol came on but the engine light did not.
I called the Ford dealer and they suggested to start it and see what happened. I restarted the truck at that time and no lights or indication of issues showed up. They suggest driving it back which I did at a reduced speed and no cruise control. I took it in for them to look at and they still have it. I would say that having this type of a safety failure would at the very least not engage the limp mode and shut off the cruise when this happens. Or let the vehicle go to neutral and or slow you down slowly. This is a huge issue considering I tow a travel trailer at times in the mountains. Ford software people need to rethink their safety limp modes for trucks at least. When it gets fixed I will add to the post.
Update from Sep 17, 2014: They replaced the valve body which has the solenoids and the transmission controller in it then re-flashed the PCM. They have a scam with ford, they charge a high core charge for the valve body assembly so you won't keep it and it is sent back to the factory never to be seen again. Transmission seems to work ok but it may have flat spotted my tires during the skid. I now have to take the tires back to the tire shop to have them checked. Brand new Michelins.

Travelling on cruise at 70 mph on a flat highway. The trucks rear end and tires suddenly locked up at the same time the RPM's increased to 5,000. I placed the truck in neutral after skidding 100ft plus and pulled over. The engine died and attempted to restart, which was successful. However, there was no response when pressing accelerator. Both the wrench and engine light illuminated.
Called the dealer for a tow and they instructed me to drive the vehicle to the dealership. They cleared and reprogrammed the transmission and instructed me to take the truck to my dealer in my home town. Help!

I have only had my f150 platinum for 8 months. I was traveling 65mph on the interstate when the truck malfunctioned, the truck tried a downshift to 1st or 2nd gear. The downshift was so violent that it was like being hit from behind. The truck tried to downshift approx. 4 times and then the transmission LOCKED UP, sending us into a slide in the shape of a U-Turn and we flipped off the interstate! We ARE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE! I don't want the truck fixed I want Ford to Replace my truck with a NEW ONE!

I have had several issues with this truck since buying it new in 2010. I have had a plug going into the transmission changed twice which was covered under warranty. Then the rear end went out had it replaced. Not even a year later had to fix the rear end again. Now the transmission. It started off going dead when stopping.
Took the truck in not reading any codes. Drove a couple more days then finally check engine light. Took back in and they said the code said that the torque converter was going out. At this time driving good and no skips. They said I could continue to drive and it may be awhile before it went out. Drove home it sat a week then when I got into it to return to work I drove into town to gas up. The truck drove fine. Got gas then started down the road and the back tires locked up and it started jerking, I pulled over into the turning lane and called a tow truck and had it towed in. Had to replace the transmission.
I’m a female driver and have never took my truck off road and have only towed a boat once. I feel that this issue should be added to the investigation of the Ford Transmissions that. Suddenly downshift.
