This is more of a report than it is a complaint, since I am very blessed to have inherited my dads 2010 Ford F-150 Lariat 4x4 with only a little over 12,000 miles on it. It was mostly parked. This was his last ford truck he bought himself after he retired. He worked for Ford way back in the sixties at a plant in New Jersey. That plant is no longer there. So he and I are loyal ford customers. With the said I was driving the truck when I decided to open the sunroof. I heard lots of grinding as the window pulled back. Something popped and a plastic piece broke off and almost hit me in the face. I then had trouble getting it to close as it would not seal back up. I messed with it little bit when I got home but could not close it back up. I now have a wind tunnel inside the cab every time I drive it. A few days later we went for a drive and asked my wife to see if she could get it closed. More grinding then a small metal bar came flying out and almost hit her. Long story short I took it to the dealer. They told me the track was broken and it needed to be replaced at a cost of $2100. This I know was the first time this window had ever been opened. I know because my dad had a hellacious comb over and would not do anything to mess it up. The dealership said it was because the window was never used not allowing the grease to lube the track. I think this was more an assumption on their part. Reading all the complaints I now know that is not true and that this looks to be a common problem. Needless to say I'm not going to fix any time soon. The mechanic suggested duct tape till I can get it fixed. I now have to tarp the truck when it rains and I live in an are where it rains a lot. So thats my story. Hope it helps in some way.

So as I was sitting in the garage last night cleaning the truck I decided to ensure that the top of the truck got a solid wipe down as well. Not a common occurrence for me but I was at it and had the time to get it done. Very infrequently do I use the moon roof. At most I have had it open 4 times since 2011. Most of those times were when the a/c went out. (that is another issue) I open the moon roof and hear an grinding noise then a pop. The moon roof was all the way back and open. I go about my business of cleaning the truck.

When I go to close the moon roof it would not budge. Nothing. Motor turns and tries to move the glass but it is stuck. Start the investigation into the cause when I discover in the track of the moon roof a piece of plastic. Knowing this was not good I start scouring the internet for how to get moon roof closed. Low and behold, yet another common occurrence for the Ford "Built Ford Tough" truck. Seems it is rather common that the little pieces of plastic that allow the moon roof to operate correctly are breaking all the time. So after using the motor with a bit of human muscle assistance I get the roof closed. Had to perform another famous Ford tape job to keep the window in place as I drive down the road.

Research that I have done shows that the cost for the plastic parts is around $120. Not too bad. I can handle that... until I read that most people are being charged up to $1600 for the fix due to extensive labor required to repair this issue. Wow. I have no idea what the next step for me will be. It has to get repaired but going about it appears to a bit of a daunting time consuming task. Most guides are saying to allow at least 4 hours to complete the task of replacing the tiny little pieces of plastic that allow this part of the truck to operate.

I have already emailed Ford about this issue and do not really expect a reply. All I asked was that Ford acknowledge that they are using inferior products causing us the consumer to pour more time and money into a truck that is far from "tough."

Initial failure of moonroof was May 2013. One year later and 1 month after only 2 uses moonroof failed again at 30,000 miles. Ford dealership said it would cost $1600. Called Ford and they said I would have to pay $300 and they would cover the rest. Two months later after a heavy rain noticed water leaking from the back of roof liner. After pulling out of driveway noticed water leaking from passenger side roof handle. Took to dealership that replaced moonroof and they stated they only replaced the broken parts and the seal was extra and wasn't replaced. Now they want $250 to replace the seal and now I have water damage inside the truck. Ford corp said they will replace for $100 but won't cover the water damage.

I'm currently working with Ford to get the unit repaired, with ford assuming some of the cost. Still in the communications stage at this point.

It's just too bad that everyone that has had an issue with this problem has not reported it to Ford so they are aware of the issue. It seems as though owners feel there unit is out of warranty, either mileage and/or years, so it's not worth while reporting it to Ford. I see all kinds of posts on forums etc. Have talked with other mechanics that work in other dealerships and/or independents that have repaired these moon roofs. All have stated the same thing, when you push the button to open the window, there's a pop pop as the window opens then it will not close as the track broke when it opened.

Had water leak, water on top of back seat, thought it was the moonroof, tried to open and close moonroof to get it to reseal. The moonroof stuck in open position during rain storm. Drove to dealer, they said the rail system had to be replaced at a cost of $1,600.00. Truck is just three years old and two months out of warranty. Told them no way I was going to pay $1,600.00 to repair a moonroof that had only been opened twice in two years, once when salesman showed us how to use it. They picked up 75% on an after warranty program, (more like they knew this was a common problem with these moonroofs). I did a little research and found out this is a common problem with these moonroofs, they us a plastic clip which constantly fails.
