F-150 FX4 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 92,000 miles

A nice, sunny day Saturday. I chose to open sunroof all the way while driving. When closing, sunroof made some cracking sounds. I could not get it to close. When parked, I opened it fully again and found a small piece of plastic in the roof opening. Retained it for repair diagnostic. Was able to use tilt mode until today, when it quit as well.

I took glass panel off and found another piece of plastic loose like the other. I found rebuild kit from Ford, (around $50-$100), and a local NAPA certified mechanic familiar with problem. I was quoted about $1200 to repair. Labor intensive because headliner needs to be pulled back to access mounting points for track guides. His suggestion, if I repair it, just don't use sunroof in future. Probably will break again due to weight of glass and quality of plastic mechanisms.

REALLY! Ford engineers, you couldn't build it "Ford Tough?"

Find it odd that this issue goes back to 2010 and only newer F-150's were recalled. It is a slap in the face to 2012 and older Ford F-150 owners.
