While driving approximately 50mph on the Natchez Trace with the air conditioner running, suddenly there is a loud pop which sounded like a gunshot. My husband pulled over and part of the side view mirror on his side (driver's) was in his lap and his window was busted out. His arm and nose were bleeding from the force of the glass breakage. I was in the passenger seat and there were tiny glass fragments causing me to bleed slightly in my left arm and left side of my face. Glass was in every nook and cranny of the truck - front and back and in our hair and clothing! We could not imagine what had happened. My husband walked back to the nearest mile marker and found the rest of the mirror. The driver's side of the truck had been scratched from just behind where the mirror had been attached down past the back door by that part of the mirror. He called the park ranger and reported the accident. He arrived and determined we did not need an ambulance. I had picked most of the glass out of my husband's clothing and mine and had begun to remove glass from our seats. The park ranger took pictures for the case and gave us a case number. He said it was a real mystery why or how something like that could even happen. I have not seen any reports of mirrors just coming off so this is a new problem. I have read about 2010 Ford F150's having windows shatter in the back when using the rear defrost. I hope that is not a problem with the 2013 models.
