  • 68,000 miles
I was driving down the on ramp to merge with traffic and my truck shifted to 1st gear locking up the back tires which caused me to almost loose control and get rear ended by the person behind me. Cause of problem found at Ford dealer was faulty molded lead frame.

  • 110,000 miles
On April 14, 2018 I was driving my 2013 F-150 on the highway approximately 70mph in the rain when the back wheels suddenly locked up and I abruptly began stopping and I lost control, fishtailing to the left and right (almost to a spin), barely missing vehicles around me and the wall to the left. The car behind me somehow veered around and missed me too. As this was happening the truck was making a loud noise as it automatically slowed down. I somehow made it to the side of the road where I parked and shut the truck off and tried to settle down and gain my composure (...it was scary, I thought I was going to die from this incident!). I restarted the truck and slowly began drive. It seemed to drive ok so I decided to take the truck to the dealer for service. As I was driving cautiously, well below the speed limit on a 40mph road the engine then shut down and I could see a screen appear with "low oil pressure". I glided to a parking lot and had my truck towed to the dealer where I purchased the truck (Suburban Ford of waterford Michigan). The dealer said there was a knock in the engine and said it threw a rod. They said the engine failure was the result of the wheels locking up. I researched and found the exact same issue on 2013 F-150's with the transmission automatically downshifting to a low gear causing the rear wheels to lock up. The dealer said they were aware of this and said there is a recall for this on 2011 and 2012 F-150's for this but no recall presently active on the 2013 F-150. I purchased a full warranty for the truck when new but the truck is just out of warranty at 110K miles. The dealer said they could provide a refurbished engine for $10,000. I've been going back and forth with Ford and the dealer at this point. This is a very dangerous life threatening issue. See: autoweek.com/article/recalls/Ford-downshifting-recall-may-expand

Speed sensor. When driving you could be stopped or moving at a high rate of speed for example I was going 50mph when the truck shifted into first causing the truck to come almost to a complete stop almost causing an accident. At other times wheb you start the truck it will shift from 1st gear to 5th gear and the wrench indicator will appear on dash while everything else turns to dashes (mileage etc). The speedometer will then show zero even while still moving.

Unexpected vehicle downshift. Unexpectedly downshifts while driving highway speeds. Speedometer will waiver erratically or bottom out down to zero. Gear indicator will drop to 1st, go back to 5th, and waiver anywhere in between. Vehicle comes to sudden drop in speed which barks the tires and throws the driver forward.

F-150

  • 95,000 miles
The transmission will shift out of gear, into a higher gear, or into a lower gear without warning. The speedometer goes to zero and the rpms will race to 5000 or 6000. The worst instance of this happened at 60 mph when it all of a sudden shifted into first gear causing the rear tires to squeal, the engine to rev, and also loose control of the vehicle. The error code of a "wrench" popped up on the dashboard. In my research, the 2011 and 2012 F150S have already been recalled but this needs to include the 2013 as well. The repair is the "lead frame" in the transmission at a cost of over $1,000. This is a very serious safety issue.

F-150

  • 47,150 miles
Transmission downshifts without notice from 6th gear to 1st gear while traveling at high speeds resulting in rear tires locking up. Periodically shifts from park directly to 5th gear and gear selection cannot be overridden by the driver unless the vehicle is turned off and restarted.

F-150

  • 60,000 miles
Transmission suddenly downshifts, causing brake squealing and rapid speed reduction, extremely dangerous as has occurred on highway. Also sometimes will put in drive and says is in 5th gear but won't move, or other times will not shift out of first gear. Very dangerous issue! has occurred numerous times over past month but doesn't generate a code or warning lights.

While driving 45 or 50 miles per hour the transmission downshifted from 6th gear to 1st causing the wheels to lock up and putting me into a skid. The rear of the truck fishtailed to the right hitting a curb. If a car was parked there or a pedestrian was walking, things could have been much worse!

Transmission shifts erratically. Sometimes it does not shift down from 5th gear and bogs down from a standing start (onviously) and I have to stop and put in park to shift again and sometimes that does not work. On a couple of occasions it shifted down to first on it's own and it felt like someone rear ended the vehicle the jolt was so hard. Service dept says they cannot do anything because it is not recalled and they cannot duplicate it (dangerously happens at random!). I do not want to drive my family in this dangerous truck!

Several times my transmission shifted from 6th gear to first gear while I was driving in traffic approximately 35-45 mph. This caused my rear tires to lock up and was almost ran over by vehicles behind me. Once it happened while pulling my utv trailer on the freeway at 65 mph. I was in the right lane because of this happening before, and as soon as it happened I shifted into neutral and turned my emergency flashers on and pulled off to the side.

Transmission is shifting erratically. Dropping several gears for no reason. Gas mileage has been slowly degrading over the last year. I believe this is because the transmission is over revving before shifting gears. The transmission fluid often smells burnt.

5 plus instances of noticeable gear shift shuddering during both up and downshifting at random times while at cruising speeds above 25+ mph. A few other instances the speedometer was observed moving rapidly and erratically while on a highway speeds along with a transmission shudder. More recently the transmission performed a significant hard down shift I never experienced before and was not expecting. All issues were observed beginning January 2018. Transmission malfunction, will not engage when vehicle is stopped. Seems like it is stuck in 5th gear. Odo reads ------, airbag and seat belt light comes on. Speedometer goes to zero. When I turn engine off and back on, it operates normal for a few miles. Was almost T-boned by semi this morning because the transmission would not engage when I pulled into intersection.

While driving, the truck downshift to 1st gear randomly. The service light came on and the truck stayed in 1st gear. All of the gauges died and I was forced to pull over.. I restarted the truck and it ran normal. The next day I was driving on the cruise control when the truck downshifted to 5th and all the gauges died. Later that day, it went into 3rd gear and would not shift. I am now having to pay 900$ to fix something tbat is already recalled for 2012 but not my 2013. Same transmissions and same issue.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle independently downshifted gears while driving various speeds. The failure occurred without warning. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but no failure was detected. Sanderson Ford (6400 N 51st ave, glendale, AZ 85301) was contacted and the contact was informed that the speed sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 73,170.

Without warning my rear wheels & drivetrain locked up while driving. My vehicle suddenly lost control and I had to drive into the grassy shoulder at around 35 mph to avoid being in traffic. As the problem was occuring, the speedometer went to 0 mph and the airbag light illuminated. The vehicle mileage in the cluster showed all dashes. The transmission felt like it was disconnected from the engine, and transmission was stuck in 5th gear at low vehicle speeds. I cycled the ignition, and truck drove normally after that. This is an intermittent problem and very dangerous to drive with as vehicle will lose power and transmission can shift to 1st gear at high vehicle speeds. My vehicle has the 6R80 faulty transmission with the same type of 6R80 molded lead frame defect problem reported in previous F150 model years. Upon contacting dealership they seemed like they never heard of the issue before. Ford should issue a recall for all vehicles with P0722 output shaft speed sensor diagnostic trouble codes. A simple electrical issue on a $100 part should not cause this type of dangerous reaction. See Ford tsb 13-4-9 and 13-2-3 and recall #16V248000 that should apply to all 2013 F-150's too.
